Do It Yourself: A New Direction For The Beauty Industry

Within the last ten years, there has been a significant increase in people taking care of their own beauty needs. Meaning, people refusing to pay someone for a service, and instead they are doing things themselves.

Everything from folks doing their own weaves, creating their own wigs, making their own hair products to even making their own nail polish. The DIY (do-it-yourself) streak has indeed gone from a weekend project to a full business. So many people are taking matters into their own hands. If they want something, they go after it. If something isn’t right, they take care of it. Meanwhile, the middleman is slowly being forgotten. The middlemen, of course, are the stores, the stylist, whoever was first to have it and gets the cut of the money. But the people are taking over now. Continue reading below to find out why I think so many people are taking care of their own beauty needs.

Health

Let’s face it; do we truly know all that we’re putting inside our bodies? Most of us don’t even have the slightest clue. We don’t even read the ingredient label on bottles anymore. We see that the front tells us it’s good for us, it will moisturize our bodies and has aloe in it and we buy it. These large corporations fool us by inserting big words that we can hardly pronounce on their ingredient labels, and we don’t question it. But we should question it! We need to start making it our business to find out what these ingredients are that we're so used to using.

Make Your Own Products

Of course, if you don’t have time for that, you could just start making your own products, like most of the world has already begun to do. With all these health scares, random diseases and cancer flying around, more people are conscious of what there’re using. If you ever have time to break down those large words on your favorite labels, you will find that yes, some are chemicals but some are just basic ingredients that are found in your home. Olive oil, eggs, honey, water, even apple cider vinegar, are all common household products that carry major benefits when used for your body. What people are beginning to notice is the ingredients are a mega force, without the chemicals! People are realizing that it doesn’t take much to create their own hair products and even lotion. They are doing their own research and experiments. Going through some trial and error on a bunch of natural products and creating some amazing things. Your health should always be number one. Large corporations can careless about how you live your life. As long as you buy from them, they win. Investing in your self is always the way to go. This way, you know exactly what you’re making and what’s in it.

Business Purposes

If you ever wanted to become a business owner, the time is now! You no longer need to go to school to get that paper that states you made it! With all the free resources on the Internet, YouTube and of course books, you can find out anything you need. More people are scratching their heads saying, “hey, I wonder if I can do that, too” and they are figuring it out. There’s no need to go to the hair store and purchase hair when you can fly out to China and have some produced yourself. Then fly back to the States and begin selling hair extensions. There’s no more paying your favorite hair stylist $150 when you can pull up a YouTube video, grab a mannequin and begin teaching yourself. This generation is taking time to perfect their craft and making it a business. They are tired of the 9-5 grind and creating a secure future for themselves. There’re learning how to simply monetize on things they have created. Even if you’re not the best at self-teaching, there are companies you can pay that will walk you step by step. Companies who have mastered the industry themselves are will to help you reach your goals. This generation has been trying really hard to break up the cycle of what the American dream used to be. Now, it’s focus on what’s new, and see how you can make it better while making a buck at the same time. And we all know the beauty industry is always evolving, so there’s room for everyone to make it to the top.

Saving Money

Who doesn’t want to save money? I know this current generation surely does. More people are doing things themselves simply because they have found a more efficient way to do them vs. paying someone. For example, we all know deep conditioning your hair is important, but when you’re down to the last drop, you now have to restock and bargain shop. A lot of these companies are selling their products for $10-$20, for a good product. But let’s be real, we aren’t mad at them for having their company. However, when you know how to do it yourself, that money stays in your pocket. One of the best DIY deep conditioning hair products is the honey and extra virgin olive mixture. In most households, honey is a staple product. You can use it for food, drinks, wound healer, etc. Plus, it lasts for a very long time. Extra virgin olive oil is the same way! So, that’s two household products that can easily be turned into a hair product. Why buy it, when you can make? That answer is exactly why more people are doing things their self. All you have to do is look around you and see what you have. Now there’s no need to go searching for a product because you just made one. This saves time and money. Nothing beats having a multipurpose product. So many people are looking for ways to save money and create things on their own that it’s becoming so easy to do so. Again, much credit belongs to the internet for housing so much information and making peoples lives better.

Creativity

Honestly, there are times when people pay for things, and they truly believe they could have done it better! So, they go and do just that. Especially if you paid for something and you didn’t like it, why not just figure it out yourself? That’s what so many people are doing. I see this much in the hair industry. People are learning how to make their own wigs and install their own extensions. Thanks to YouTube, there has been a rise of women showing step-by-step instructions for so many different hair techniques. Viewers watch, then master the foundation of a technique and then use that to create a look they really want. You don’t have to spend time and money trying to get a stylist to understand your vision. Not too long ago, Rapper Nicki Minaj was seen wearing extremely long braids. People assumed it was a wig because the braids were so long. Although we don’t really know, it was most likely a lace cap that looks really natural. It’s the newest technique/style that’s out. Now, of course, wigs have been out since forever, but this new style of lace wigs is so much better. People are getting creative, and it’s working. Think of an idea, plan and then execute!

Making History

For decades, whenever you went to get your nails done, it was normally a Chinese woman doing them. People loved it so much because they always did a great job, and still do. But that’s also all we knew. However, times are slowly changing, and other races also want to become known for doing nails and having the best shop. Although they haven’t dominated the industry yet, I’m predicting that soon they will. A lot of the current ones even offer many services that you won’t normally find in your local shop. Some women have even created their own nail polish lines. Coming up with many different shades and colors that are rare. Truthfully, it’s always been just the same few major brands dominating the beauty industry. But people want to move in with their own creative ideas and break barrios of their own. Wanting to make history is major. It shows the world that there’s more than one way of doing things. It also shines a light on the talents of new companies and people. I just shared some reasons why people do things on their own instead of paying someone. The world is changing; times are changing are people are becoming more bold and fearless than ever before! It’s not just your brand labels and celebrities who are setting trends and making noise. Now it's the 24-year-old who looks up to those people and companies and believes they too can create a masterpiece. It’s the person who has been told they could never become anything. I salute them and hope more and more people become business owners and begin doing things the way they want it to be done.
