10 Sweet Reasons to Add Honey to your Hair Routine

Sweet, Sweet Honey

Honey is something we often overlook.

Anyone who knows me knows how much I love using natural products, whenever I involve my health, skin, nails and especially my hair. Over the last few years, I came to realize that most of the foods and ingredients in my kitchen can also be used for more than just food and drink purposes and that is when I started using honey a lot more than I intended.

Not only are people, in general, are turning more towards a holistic way of living, but the beauty industry is noticing as well and taking an interest. These days you see women in beauty stores and shops taking the time to read the ingredients, seeing how they can benefit from its use. Woman all over are demanding their favorite beauty brands to offer natural remedies for their skin and hair.

We even see a rise in the “no makeup, makeup” look taking hold in the media and putting emphasis on healthy skin, nails and hair. When it comes to hair especially, home-remedies have their way into everyone’s bodies.

And while apple cider vinegar and coconut oil have their cult-following, honey is healthy for your hair, too.

Why Should We Add the Honey?

Let’s take a quick moment to thank the bees for producing this multipurpose home remedy that you can use for pretty much anything.

Honey is a nature-made humectant that retains moisture and is loaded with antioxidants to fight off environmental stressors. Most people around the country, by now, know honey as an alternative to contributing to a healthier lifestyle.

But who knew that slathering the sticky, sweet substance onto your hair could add to its overall health? Okay, some of you probably did know about honey’s conditioning properties, but did you know that it can do so much more? Not only is honey as sweet as it can be for your teas and breakfast meals.

But let’s check out ten reasons why you should think about adding some of it to your hair routine:

Reasons for Honey

1. It Contributes to Hair Growth

If you are like most of my friends, then you probably slack off when taking your hair vitamins.

I always suggest to them that they add honey to their weekly hair routine and in a monthly check for a difference in your hair’s health. If you're not too keen on oral hair growth supplements, try adding honey to your routine for a natural stimulant.

It is an emollient that seals in moisture and sustains conditioning while its antioxidant properties protect strands against environmental damage. If you add a few drops of honey to your routine, it enhances your regular wash with antiseptic elements.

That will strengthen your hair follicles and lead to less fallout.

2. Honey Can Make Your Hair Shine

Who doesn’t want shiny hair? At times, shiny hair seems like something unachievable especially when you think you have tried everything possible to get the results.

But, have you thought about using honey as an alternative? The key is knowing what precisely in the products you use, that contribute to nourishing your hair strands. Hair feels soft when you nourish and moisturize it, and honey is known for its ability to lock in moisture for long periods of time.

Milk contains casein and whey proteins which strengthen strands and adds shine to the hair. Honey also comprises of antibacterial and antiseptic qualities. That prevents scalp infections and soothes issues like dandruff, eczema, and psoriasis.

Honey can cleanse the hair follicles by getting rid of impurities. Less clogging equals more shine time!

3. Honey works as a Shampoo Additive or a No-Poo Solution

Yes, you read that right! Honey is your new shampoo solution. Let me set the scene for you.

You are getting ready to spend the entire Sunday washing your hair (we know how those wash days can go), you start the pre-poo process, and you start pulling out all of the other products you need for the day when suddenly you realize you forgot to buy new shampoo.

You pull out the empty shampoo bottle only to recognize, and you don’t even have enough of it to squeeze out of the bottle. What do you do now? Head towards the kitchen and pull out the honey. Similarly, to how people move towards an apple cider vinegar wash when their hair care routine is product-free, honey can be used as shampoo, too.

If you mix one tablespoon of raw honey into half a cup of water and mix well, you will get the same results as shampoo would but better. Apply to hair like you would any traditional shampoo and rinse thoroughly. If you must have your regular shampoo, don’t sweat it.

Try adding a teaspoon of honey to a dime-sized amount of your shampoo for much-needed moisture retention.

4. You can use Honey for Highlights Without the Use of Hair Dye

I had a bad experiencing dying my hair back in high school when I tried going blonde.

Let’s say that things did not work out the way I expected. My hair became extremely damaged from all of the chemicals and dye in my hair, and I vowed never to dye it again. But, did you know that honey is useful in lightening your hair?

A lot of people, like me, are opposed to hair dye because of the chemicals, but if you're interested in highlighting your strands, honey can do so naturally. If you are wondering if this works, yes it does. I am a witness. If you add a mixture of three tablespoons of honey and two tablespoons of water to damp hair, allowing the blend to sit and settle for one hour before rinsing, you will start seeing results in a few weeks.

The key is to perform this method once a week until results are visible. It may not be as fast as a salon treatment, but there's no damage done to hair or scalp, and you still get what you want. Good things take time anyway!

5. It Gives Your Hair Strands the Vitamins and Minerals They Need to Thrive

Even though we see a shift in the number of harmful chemicals in hair products, we still know that they are there and lurking.

Commercial shampoos can get the job done, but unless your label reads “natural” or “organic,” chances are chemicals are hiding throughout the formula, but nobody will tell you that.

That brings me to why you should love honey for your hair as much as I do. Raw, unprocessed honey is rich in essential nutrients. In processed products vitamins and minerals are often diluted with those hard-to-pronounce ingredients (that you later look up and realize how bad it is for your hair in general).

It can restore breakage and add a ton of moisture to a dehydrated head of hair. If you did not already know, honey is a humectant, and it attracts moisture from the air. This property, along with its antibacterial, emollient and softening properties make it ideal for hair and scalp care.

Can your shampoo do this? I think not!

6. Honey Seals in Moisture

No matter what hair type you have, all hair needs some amount of consistent moisture to thrive and retain its overall health.

I said this before, but I need to reiterate how moisturizing this stuff is for your hair. Honey is a natural humectant, meaning that it takes the moisture from the air and can seal it in your hair and skin.

This fact helps to keep your hair conditioned and nourished, which will reduce breakage. That allows it to stay active and healthy and grow longer. Side note: Sealing in moisture also prevents dryness and premature wrinkles.

Why not add honey to your overall skin care routine as well?

7. It Minimizes Impurities

None of us are perfect, but it would be great if we can keep our hair and skin at bay at all times.

It is a great additive to help solve this issue. Not only does honey strengthen the hair follicle, but it also cleans any impurities off of them. Why is this a big deal? Honey also works to strengthen your hair follicles.

Doing this for your hair follicles keep hair from falling out, so you can finally get the length you’ve been working for all this time. Potent antioxidants are found in it as well, and they work to prevent damage to your hair and keep the scalp healthy.

When impurities build up on hair follicles, it can cause them to get clogged and the hair to fall out.

8. Honey Treats Dandruff

We all hate those flakes that occasionally pop up in our scalps, which indicate that it needs a lot of TLC.

Dandruff and the itchy scalp are a pain in the butt for many of us. If you find dandruff shampoos to be excessively drying to your hair, then you should give honey a try. Honey and warm water mixture can relieve itching and flake within a week.

It is best to leave the mixture on for about three hours, but I know some of us do not have the kind of time. Do the honey rinse as long as you need to because either way, it is beneficial. Another fun fact is that skin lesions can heal within two weeks of using it. Honey has anti-fungal, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that keep the scalp free of bacteria.

This also addresses redness and itching caused by the overgrowth of certain bacteria. These properties also help to heal cuts in the scalp that may be caused by scratching or scraping the scalp.

9. It Is a Natural Hair Conditioner

My hair requires constant moisture for there not to be any damage to my hair strands.

Not only is it great for shampoo, but you can also use it as a natural conditioning treatment for your hair and scalp. If you have tried homemade deep conditioners in the past, chances are you would have tried the recipe that uses olive oil and honey as the only two ingredients.

This recipe is probably one of the most popular homemade deep conditioner recipes among naturals and is as simple as it gets. They both have moisturizing properties. It's a matter of preference, and the result is hair that is softer, shinier and more manageable than before.

Adding honey to your regular conditioner or deep conditioner is also common and beneficial.

10. Honey is Rich in Antioxidants

Throughout the article, you saw me talking about antioxidants quite a bit. But, what do they do for the hair?

It is clear that they are present in this and other natural ingredients that we use for our hair, skin, and nails. Applying it on hair can do a lot of wonders for the health of your hair and scalp.

Antioxidants in it can prevent free radicals or other harmful bacteria from damaging your hair. They can also improve your hair’s overall health, as well as of the roots and scalp.

Antioxidants in it also promote hair growth while also enhancing your hair texture and look.

To Eat or Not to Eat Honey

First of all, honey is delicious, so you should put it on everything (I mean it).

But, not only that, it is fantastic for more than just food preparation. Honey’s anti-bacterial properties give it the option to be a great addition to your hair, whether it is daily, weekly, or even monthly.

Applying honey on hair can be a vital part of many hair care routines, especially if you are looking for a new and long-term way to add and seal in moisture. It offers several benefits for the hair. As a humectant, honey aids in retaining moisture. It also serves as an effective emollient, which means that it works in softening your hair and making it smoother.

With so many benefits, it is no longer surprising why many, including the team here at Private Label Extensions and me, consider it as an excellent moisturizer and conditioner.
