how to prevent a bad haircut

Bad Haircut? No Problem! Here's how to Prevent It!

Trials of A Bad Haircut

If you are like me, you’ve had a bad haircut before. When I was 10, I decided to cut my bangs. That was a huge mistake because I came out looking like an unkempt tree. My hair was all over the place, and I had no idea what to do to fix it. Luckily, my mother was around to help me. However, despite her help, my hair still looked like a wild bush, and I had to walk around for a month before being able to be normal again. When dealing with bad haircuts, it is essential to know what options work best. At the time, I didn’t know how to fix or even cover something like a bad haircut. I couldn’t wear hats in school, and scarves were banned. I didn’t want to try and cut my hair again because I was afraid it would be too short, so I just left it alone and let it grow out. If you have ever dealt with a bad haircut, you understand. Luckily, due to progression, we have options. We have options that range from extensions to alternate styling and more. Here, at Private Label Extensions, we’re going to give you all the tools to manage a bad haircut.

Bad Haircut Prevention 101

Before we talk about the ways to manage a bad haircut, let’s discuss the different ways we can avoid one altogether. In most situations, it is better to be proactive rather than reactive. Why? Well, the more you do to prevent a bad haircut, the easier it is to manage the damage control that occurs if you receive a bad one anyway. Also, when you know better, you do better.

Bring A Visual Representation

If you’re going to see a hairstylist, make sure you choose someone that knows what they’re doing when it comes to cutting hair. Of course, it’s a requirement that hairstylists know how to cut hair accurately, but not everyone is equipped to cut your hair. Do your research on your hairstylist and make sure that they have experience with your hair texture. If they don’t, choose someone that does. When you book your appointment, make sure you ask them if they can do the style you desire. Be specific. Try to avoid talking regarding inches because while being particular in that ways does help, most hairstylists aren’t pulling out a ruler to cut your hair. Instead, be visual. Showcase precisely where you want your hair to end. Bring a picture, and show them the style. By doing this, you’re giving your stylist enough information to avoid mistakes.

Be Honest About What You Can Get

One of my biggest mistakes was assuming that my hair would come out exactly how I pictured it despite my texture. I remember going to my hairstylist with a specific idea in mind and left with the exact opposite of what I imagined. It had nothing to do with the hairstylist but everything to do with the fact that I wasn't realistic about what I could do with my hair. It is essential, to be honest about what you can do with your hair because even the best hairstylist can’t perform a miracle. When you’re honest about what it is you can achieve with your hair, you avoid mistakes. If you have 4c hair, don’t expect your hair to come out looking bone straight an clean cut without some manipulation such as heat, or chemicals. If you want a specific style, and you and your hairstylist cannot agree, tell them politely that you want a second opinion before making such a significant change. This way, your hairstylist doesn’t have to worry about having an unhappy client.

Pay Attention

When you’re getting a new hairdo that involves making major, or even minor, cuts, it’s essential to pay attention. Don’t spend time on your phone, or flipping through a book unless you completely trust your hairstylist and know that they will give you exactly what you want. It’s important to pay attention so that you can make suggestions or ask questions. The more you’re involved, the better your result will be.

Know The Maintenance

When getting a new haircut, it is imperative that you know the proper maintenance needed to manage your unique style. Many people have the misconception that haircuts are easy to maintain, but depending on the texture and style that isn’t always true. Some hairstyles will require at least 10-20 minutes of maintenance in the morning. If you’re someone that knows you don’t have this kind of time, don’t choose that style. Choose styles that fit your lifestyle because those will be the easiest to manage. If you’re willing to shift your regular day schedule, then get whatever hairstyle you want. Ask your hairstylists about the tricks and necessary tools to maintain your look. Ask them how long you should wait before shampooing your hair and be adamant about knowing how to rejuvenate your look after a certain amount of time. You don’t want to spend a lot of money just for your look to be dull a few weeks later.

Prevention, But Still A Bad Haircut?

If you took all the necessary steps to prevent a bad haircut, and still ended up with a style you don’t like, don’t stress out. It’s not fun having a look you don’t want, especially when it involves missing inches. However, just because you got a bad cut, doesn’t mean that it is over. Take a deep breath. Express your dislike of your haircut to your stylist. Be honest about what’s wrong with the style, and ask if they can refund you. Typically, salons have no issue giving out refunds, or not accepting payment until the client is satisfied. If you don’t trust your stylist to fix the style, then pick a different stylist to get the job done right. Here are some ways to fix a bad haircut using extensions.

Went With A Short Cut?

If you decided to get a shortcut and hate it, don’t worry. Often people will choose to get a shortcut, such as a big chop, or a low fade, and decide they hate it immediately after. In most cases, if this is their first time getting this kind of look, it’ll take time for a person to adjust to their new look. Luckily, a shortcut is the easiest to cover up and maintain. A wig is a great way to cover up a shortcut. Wigs are also versatile and come in a variety of different styles so you’ll never get bored with your look. Also, since you have a shortcut, you don’t have to worry too much about your hair underneath. Why? Well, since it is short, all you’ll need to do is moisturize it correctly, and keep it clean. If your hair is shorter than ear length, do not attempt to braid your hair. You don’t want to pull on your edges too much, especially since you don’t have the necessary length to curb the pulling. You can get a lace front, but since you can’t braid your hair, it won’t be secure without glue or adhesive. If you’re not worried about using glue or adhesive, then try out this kind of look. If something like this worries you, don’t bother because using glue or adhesive around the edges can be damaging, even to individuals with short to no hair.

For Bad Bangs

My worst nightmare when getting my haircut was getting a bad haircut that involved my bangs looking a mess. I had always assumed that bangs were impossible to fix and that the only thing you could do was to be patient and wait it out. Fortunately, we’ve developed ways to avoid that nightmare and fix bangs even when they’re messed up. No matter the length of your hair, adjusting your bangs with extensions is quick and easy. For those of you not looking to deal with sew-ins, you can use clip-ins. Clips-ins come in different lengths and colors so finding the perfect clip-in will be easy. When getting the clip-ins, make sure you’re getting some that are already long. You’ll want to be able to cut and style them as necessary. Clip-ins are an easy way to give your hair color, or volume without completely manipulating your hair. They are also the easiest way to fix bangs until your hair grows out to standard length. Find your color ad preferred length and be prepared to stop stressing. The only issue with clip-ins is that they can be a bit more noticeable than something like a weave or a frontal. If you want your look to seem as realistic as possible, definitely try getting a weave, or a frontal. This way, you’ll be able to partially or fully protect your real hair, and still, have a great hairstyle.

Jagged Ends?

Jagged ends can be the worst. When your hair is noticeably uneven, it is essential to know methods to fix it. Although it’ll take your hair some time to grow out, you can still look amazing by adding some extensions. Anytime that you add extensions to your hair ask a professional to assist you. If you can’t set aside the time, or money to acquire their services, then ask for a quick consultation. This way, they can steer you in the right directions, and let you know the best way to proceed. Adding extensions to jagged or unevenly cut hair can be tricky because you’ll need to style it well enough to conceal the unevenness. If you decide to get a weave, you’ll need to figure out how you want to part it, and how you want it to be layered. For a layered look that looks great, try getting bundles in different lengths. By doing this, you won’t have to cut too much of the hair that you purchase. If you decide to get or make a wig, then you won’t have to worry about layering. For an uneven haircut, its best not to use clip-ins because some parts of your hair won’t be able to cover the clip-in, and you’ll be left exposed.

For Any Bad Haircut

As you can see, extensions are versatile and can assist with any lousy haircut. However, extensions are only a part of the process when it comes to taking care of your hair after a bad haircut. Even when you hate your hair, you have to take care of your hair. Make sure you wash your hair at least four days after getting your haircut. Sometimes, your hair won’t look as bad with a different texture. If you like how your hair looks with a curly texture versus a straight or vice versa, then you can do that as an option as well. If you’re dealing with a haircut that requires that you be patient and wait it out, then you’ll want to make sure that your hair is in the best position to grow. No matter what kind of extensions you’ve decided to get, make sure you moisturize your hair. It’s difficult for hair to grow when it is dry and brittle. When you take care of your hair, it lengthens much faster than usual. Also, taking care of your hair also includes taking care of your extensions. When you put extensions in your hair, you have to treat them as if they were your hair. Why? Because for the time being, they technically are. Don’t forget to condition, and dry your extensions while they are in, and change them about every 4-6 weeks depending on your extension type.

There’s No Need To Worry

A bad haircut isn’t the end of the world! Don’t stress yourself out. Take some deep breaths and understand that there are different solutions to your problem. Also, know that you’re not alone.
