When I was younger, I had long luscious hair. My sister, my mother, and I had long hair that was full, and healthy. I never had trouble growing my hair, but when I started relaxing my hair, it became damaged. Nobody in my family knew the proper maintenance for relaxed hair, so my hair became dry, brittle, and dull. When I turned 10, my hair started to break off, and as a result, it became shorter. Since then, I’ve tried all kinds of tricks, and tips to get my hair back to its’ original length. For a while, the best option for me was wearing protective styles. Protective styles gave me the ability to protect my hair from damage, and let it grow. I thought protective styles were the only way until my friend introduced me to hair pills! So, if we’re getting enough biotin, why take more? Well, people are convinced that biotin increases hair growth. Overall, there haven’t been any studies showcasing evidence for significant hair growth after using hair supplements with biotin as the main ingredient. However, some studies show that women with thinning hair may benefit from using biotin. However, despite this evidence, there’s still not enough to suggest that taking biotin increases hair growth. Advantages Of Hair Pills

Most hair pills have about 2500 to 5000 mg of biotin in them. This much biotin is what makes the hair pills so potent. Biotin is vital for energy production. Biotin assists with the synthesis of fatty acids, and the breakdown of amino acids. Biotin supports the metabolism in many ways. Also, when taking hair pills, you should see a difference in your nails. Not only does it help your hair, but biotin helps your nails grow! In some studies, they found that about 2.5 mg of biotin per day for about six months to a year reduced nail splitting, and improved nail thickness. My friend that takes biotin has healthy nails that don’t break or split for any reason. Biotin is also great for those that are breastfeeding or pregnant. Taking hair pills while pregnant is a great way to reduce biotin deficiencies which cause birth defects. The biotin found in hair pills is also known to assist with skin health. If you suffer from red, scaly skin, then biotin may be the supplement for you. Of course, all of these benefits aren’t supported by much evidence. Make sure that you talk to a physician before taking any new supplements.

Disadvantages of Hair Pills

Biotin has plenty of benefits, but anything with benefits has its’ disadvantages as well. Our bodies don’t require much biotin. We only require a small amount of biotin to avoid a deficiency. The amount of biotin in hair pills is extremely high. Even a small dosage of biotin changes a lot in the body. For example, doing a lab test while taking biotin may affect the results of certain tests. When testing for thyroid issues, and cardiac troponin levels, it’s essential that your intake of biotin is minimal. Taking biotin while getting lab tests could result in a misdiagnosis or a missed diagnosis. You don’t want to risk that. Also, many people have stated that taking biotin causes them to break out. It’s important to drink lots of fluid when taking biotin. Not doing so has the potential to cause cystic acne breakouts. My friend that took hair pills with 5000mg of biotin said that her skin hadn't been the same since. Her skin kept breaking out, and even though she drank water, it didn’t subside. As always, it’s essential to consult with a physician before making any decisions on taking biotin.

All in all, hair pills have tons of advantages, but they also have plenty of disadvantages. Biotin is already a part of our natural composition, but sometimes taking more helps with a variety of things. Don’t forget that most biotin benefits don’t have enough evidence to support their claim of being helpful. It seems like the media had caused a commotion around it which led petiole to believe that taking hair pills leads to hair growth. The truth is that growing your hair will take time, and no amount of pills will give you overnight results. Try incorporating more healthy foods into your diet that will increase growth. Also, try out different oils and protective styles and see how those work out for you!
