How Your Hair Changes in your 20’s, 30’s and 40’s

My Hair is Changing, Help!

Who loves being a woman who regularly goes through changes? I am pretty sure that the answer will vary but being a woman is definitely a ride. These changes include things from our skin, our nails, and most importantly, our hair as they transform in our 20’s, 30’s, and 40’s.

As time goes on so does our biological clock and all of the beauty that comes with it.

Like many instances time inevitably changes things around and on us, but with this time we learn how to deal with our refined features and treat them in a manner that is relevant to us now. Our hair is most certainly one of those features that are continuously changing and always needing an updated regime as time moves forward.

It can be a shock when you see something that you know so well change seemingly overnight, and it can be an even bigger shock when you realize that you do not know how to take care of your new locks. I promise it is okay though!

Like many things in life, we always manage to figure it out, and your hair is no exception to that. If you are stuck, confused or just “over it,” do not worry about a thing, we have some simple explanations, tips, tricks, tools, and remedies to get you through every stage.

Hair

Your Hair in Your 20s

In your twenties, you may have noticed that this was when your hair was the most luscious, full, thick, lively, and bouncy!

We feel like we can take on the world by a simple flip of our curls! But also like our twenties, we experiment so much because we are always finding ourselves going through phases and stages.

To date in my personal hair journey, I have had bleach blonde, red, blue, pink, and purple hair. Can we say doing the most?

Over processed, overdone, and under-loved are also ways in which our hair goes from being cared for to care less. Those once full and bouncy tresses turn into dry, brittle, and damaged hair almost overnight. Yes, your twenties mean experimentation, but we must not forget about the health of our hair too. Luckily for us, it is easier to revert our damaged strands into healthier ones at this young stage in our lives.

Sometimes in our twenties, we go off of feeling instead of what is right for our hair, and sometimes that only aids in the ongoing frustration of what to do next. In most cases, the best bet would be to leave our hair alone merely, but knowing a twenty-something woman, it is borderline impossible.

On the natural side, different hormones play a prominent role in how our hair pans out in our twenties. Whether it is due to stress or genetics, a hormone imbalance could occur and leave our hair doing all types of twists and turns that we would have never expected. That is not to say that you cannot turn this on its head!

To fix any hormone imbalance that could be affecting your physical features and most importantly your health take the following tips to heart:

Hair Journey

Tip #1 See your doctor

To make sure everything is functioning as it should take a trip to your doctor's office for a full-body physical.

Sometimes we ignore the fact that just because we are young, we do not have to see a doctor. Wrong! Taking charge of your health early on lessens the chance of severe conditions later on.

Getting to the root of many issues now will create a lot fewer problems later.

Tip #2 Lay off the color

If you are continually changing your hair color, you may want to stop for a while.

Always refreshing your color does serve amazing looks, but it does weaken the strands of your hair, no matter if you are a professional or not. Too many chemicals are not that good for anyone’s hair, besides if you are really craving a change, invest in some colorful wigs to offset future damage!

Tip #3 Cut down on the heat

Preserving your hair for its best health in your twenties sometimes starts with how you style your hair. Your hair alone is in its prime because of your age, but it is always great to take the extra steps in considering its best health.

Tip #4 Cut it if you don’t need it

Like a bad break up, cut it off if it is not serving you well. Dead hair does not help you no matter how old you are and the sooner you get rid of it, the better.

In your twenties, your hair is definitely in a better state than most, and to keep up with its health after you have exited your twenties will cause you to make a few hair changes. You do not have to give up the fun parts of your age range, but you do not always have to feel like it is your everything.

Hair at any age is a journey and often poses challenges with hair changes that we probably never thought we would take on. It is entirely okay to be unsure of what is happening just as long as you notice that something is happening in the first place.

Cut the hair

Your Hair in Your 30s

Apparently, your thirties are going to be the best time of your life.

While I am in my mid-twenties and do not exactly know that yet, I feel like this can be true. However, with your new decade comes a new set of challenges like the ones that occur in the form of your hair. When it comes to health, the same set of challenges from your twenties can follow you into your thirties. However, regardless of how they got there, you can continue to combat it with proper exercise, diet, and reformed regime.

To combat hair changes that seem to be extreme now is the time where you delve into self-care that genuinely centers you in mind, body, and soul. Women, in general, are prone to stressors that range from environmental, work, home, and sometimes trauma.

These same stressors play a vital role in how the health of our hair pans out in our thirties.

Tip #1 Less manipulation

So we have all heard it before and have probably seen those YouTube videos on how too much manipulation hurt my hair.

Well, as hard as it is to believe it is true. One thing that I have found is that as you get older the less you actually want to deal with your hair, so we look to braids, weaves, wigs, and sew-ins to give us more time in the morning.

These manipulations may save time, but they could be doing underlying damage such as weakening your hair at the follicle and on the shaft. If you find yourself manipulating your hair more than most, try a few low manipulation styles such as a loose ponytail, a twist out, or low bun.

Selecting methods that do not require you to refresh your look every day not only save you time but saves you the pain of shedding.

Tip #2 Eat for your health

Eating good and eating what is right for you are two different things is, so listen up.

I know, I know, you love those salty potato chips, that ice-cold soda and that chocolate candy that you treat yourself to at the end of every workweek, and while those taste good, they are not suitable for your hair.

It is okay to have our past time favorites in moderation but when it comes to our hair and the health of it we need foods with plenty of nutrients, vitamins, and minerals. Water-soluble foods such as cucumbers, watermelon, and pretty much any nutrient-dense food will do your hair and overall health wonders! We have to remember that our beauty literally comes from the inside out and neglecting that will show over time.

Tip #3 Incorporate vitamins into your daily routine

So aside from eating healthy, we sometimes need a little help or “push” to get to our best selves. Incorporating a multivitamin into your daily routine is said to help boost the most important parts of being a woman.

The best part about these multivitamins is that many of them come with an increase in Vitamin D and biotin! Vitamin D is good for the health of our bone, and immune system functions and biotin, of course, is the supplement that aids us in the growth of our hair, skin, and nails.

Tip #4 Work It Out

If you are not yet into yoga, Zumba, or a cardio class, get into it girl!

Working out not only helps us to understand that summer body that so many of us want, but it also helps to ease down on stress which is a common factor in hair breakage and falls out.

In the article referencing Jada Pinkett-Smith and her recent hair loss, stress is a common factor among women who experience hair loss or conditions such as alopecia and the closer you reach your late thirties the more prone you are to it. In short, working out is a way to cut down on the constant stress and to improve your overall health!

Don’t Worry, Hair Loss in Your 30s Happens

In your thirties, hair loss is a give or take and you honestly never know if it will affect you or not.

To determine how you are handling the everyday stresses of life, see your physician! Your doctor will know more about what is going on with you with viable resources than anyone else will.

Still concerned, talk to your closest girlfriends and pick their brains to see what their hair has been like since reaching their thirties. Sometimes, constant hair changes lead us to that fearful part of our mind which sometimes leads us to think that we are the reason behind these unforeseen hair changes.

News flash, this is not your fault!

Changes come with age and are inevitable, embrace this new stage and understand that your thirties present new challenges with new solutions.

Your Hair in Your 40s

Finally, we have reached our peak and it just so happens to be our forties.

The age of the grown woman and the age of the woman who knows what she wants, especially when it comes to her hair.

Like many women, you have probably been through so many hair changes like coloring your hair in your twenties, the stresses of your thirties and finally having it somewhat figured out in your forties. For many women in their forties, they describe their hair as a forever changing matter.

Your hair in your forties may be thinner than usual, possibly shorter or even the complete opposite! Whatever your hair is like, it is yours.

In your forties your regime should be a combination of the tips in your twenties and thirties such as getting your vitamins in, giving your follicles a rest with the constant heat and coloring and getting exercise where you need it the most.

A few more tips include giving your hair that extra moisture and changing the way you style it. Maybe you feel as though you are in a rut with your hair, have you considered completely changing it all around? Try a short haircut to eliminate styling, that way you will not have to deal with extra products and elongated time in the mirror or the salon.

Or maybe you should try a headwrap on those days that you simply do not what to do next. The possibilities are endless!
