How To Keep Your Relaxed Hair Healthy In Summer

What You Need To Know

Summer is officially here, and while we’re excited to be in the summer sun finally, it’s essential that we take time to think about our hair and how the new season can affect it. If you have relaxed hair, you're going to want to pay attention to this! Summer heat means more humidity and more dry heat. Whenever summer comes around, I love going to the beach or pool to cool off. The summer is also the season where I’m most active outside. When I was younger, I used to hate spending time outside because my hair would always become frizzy, and look ridiculous. At the time, my hair was relaxed, and I didn’t know how to take care of it under extreme conditions such as heat, sand, sweat, and chlorine. It was a nightmare! Eventually, I stopped perming my hair because I couldn’t take it. When I got older, I met this friend of mine that always permed her hair, and despite what she did, it still looked flawless. When I asked her what her secrets were, she let me know that she’s always having to regularly take care of her hair, and keep up with her appointments. After doing some research, I’ve found out the different ways for relaxed hair to flourish in the summer!

Relaxed Hair? No Problem!

There are five key things to pay attention to while taking care of relaxed hair during the summer. Your hair is an entirely different texture while it’s comfortable. Due to this, you’ll want to ensure that you’re taking extra time to tend to your hair. Neglecting relaxed hair is the quickest way for it to become damaged. You’ll need to put in just a little more effort if you want your hair to survive the summer heat. The five things to pay attention to are washing your hair weekly to moisturize it, avoiding too much heat styling, drinking water and having a healthy diet, getting a regular trim, and talking with a hairstylist. If you want something low maintenance, then relaxing your hair may not be for you. If your hair is already relaxed, but you want to try out a protective style, you should talk with your stylist, first. Your hair can become damaged if you do a protective style that isn’t conducive to what your hair needs. Don’t be afraid to ask questions about what works best for your hair!

Moisture Is Your Friend!

No matter what your hair texture is, washing your hair is very important. If you have relaxed hair, you’re going to want to wash your hair every week. Most hairstylists recommend that you use a bottle of shampoo that won’t dry out your hair. Shampoos that are infused with oats, honey, and essential oils are my favorite. After using shampoo, you’re going to want to use a deep conditioner or hot oil treatment. Use something that has protein in it so that it is extra hydrating. By doing this, you’re giving your hair the moisture that it needs!

Heat Can Cause Damage!

Heat is always a risky move to make when it comes to hair, but it’s even more dangerous with relaxed hair. Hair is already naturally dry. When you relax your hair, it becomes even more dehydrated. Adding heat to the equation is just a recipe for disaster. To protect your hair even more during the summer season, you’ll want to go easy on heat styling. Try to refrain from heat styling as much as possible. When you do use heat on your hair, make sure that you’re using a heat protectant. To make your style last, be sure to cover your hair at night, and only remove it right when you’re about to leave.

Trim! Trim! Trim!

Trimming your hair is such an essential part to the health of your hair. Whenever you’re about to get treatment for your hair, you should be trimming your ends so that your hair can grow exponentially. Some people think that not cutting hair will help it improve, but that’s not true at all! The more you trim, the more you grow. If there were a real hair bible, that would be in the top five rules. So, even if you’re scared to trim your hair, you must understand that it’ll benefit you in the long run. This is especially true if you have relaxed hair. In the summertime, you want to make sure you’re trimming whenever necessary so that your hair can flourish!

Water is Hair’s Heaven!

Honestly, what is water not suitable for? It’s so essential to so many things but especially your hair. When you pair water with a proper diet, you can almost always expect to see surprising results in your appearance. When you cut our junk food and increase your vitamin intake, your hair will thank you! Some of my favorite vitamins to take are B12, omega supplements, and a minimal dose of biotin. This combination works best for me, but before trying it out, you should consult with a professional to see what works best for you!

Your Hairstylist Will Help You!

The last and most important tip to maintaining relaxed hair during the summer is consulting with your hairstylist. Most people like to relax their hair themselves, but because of the sensitivity of relaxing, I always suggest visiting a hairstylist. A hairstylist will be able to spot any damage on your hair and give you the best products to use while your hair is relaxed. They can guide you during the summer so that your hair isn’t completely dried out in the heat. Also, if you have any issues with your hair or scalp, you’ll be able to ask them the best form of treatment.

SummerTime Can Be Fun!

I know so many people that dread summer time because of the heat and how it can ruin hair, but there’s no need to! Summertime is a great time to learn the best ways to keep your hair moisturized. If your hair is relaxed, you’ll need to pay close attention to how it reacts to the different elements of summer. Make sure to moisturize, trim, and talk to your stylist! Don’t be afraid to ask questions if you need answers.
