Flaunt Your Star Power: Looks From the Oscars Red Carpet

Oscars Hair Inspiration

The 2018 Oscars is one award show which set the stage for activism and gorgeous hair inspiration. This article is not about politics nor activism, but I think it will be safe to say these two topics influenced a lot of the style choices for this year’s production. As with any great outfit, the hair has to match the overall look, and I must admit those who walked the red carpet, for the most part, got it right! You may not watch the entire show but, if you are like me, you want to know who wore what on the Oscars red carpet. It’s that time of the year that we get to see what’s trending and predictions of what will be hot for the upcoming season. The Oscars give us a glimpse into the style evolution of many of the celebrities we adore and seek to emulate their style. Whether it’s Zendaya, Mary J. Blige, or Helen Mirren Hollywood leaves no one out during the festivities. I love that there is a representation of every woman. The beauty of fashion is it can bring people together, increase awareness, and make a statement. You know what you have to do! Go ahead and press play on your favorite playlist and let's get started!

Black Panther Inspiration on The Red Carpet

A cultural phenomenon hit the movie theatres and the Oscars red carpet this year. Can we just applaud the melanin magic that is Black Panther? Can we celebrate the success of the movie and the fact it has grossed over $1,000,000,000 in less than one month of its’ release date? This movie has ignited a higher sense of pride, and the cast exhibited it on the red carpet. Let's get into some of the hairstyles worn by some of the cast members from the movie.

Danai Gurira

Danai Gurira is stunning on the Oscars red carpet! When they say “less is more” they have to be referring to her because she slayed with a shaved head! The intricate white design on her scalp added to the regal beauty she exudes on the red carpet. I have to tell you when she tosses that wig in Black Panther it reminded me of how I throw mine as soon as I hit the door to my house after a long day! It was hilarious! If you have been thinking about shaving it all off, think about a few of the pros and cons before you do it. Check out my list below and then let me know if you are going to shave your hair or not.

Pros and Cons of Shaved Head

Pros

  • You will get a lot of attention (but if you don’t like a lot of attention this may be a con for you)
  • This style is effortless because you don’t have to style it at all
  • You will be the first one ready to go because you don’t have to “style” your hair
  • It saves you money due to not having to purchase tons of products
  • It will make you feel empowered
  • You get to start over and grow your hair out (if you want)

Cons

  • People will want to rub your head
  • Some people will stare at you (but if you like the attention this may be a pro for you)
  • You may need to shave your head once a week
  • It will take a while for your hair to grow back

Angela Bassett

Angela Bassett gets it right every time! The half-up-half-down style she rocks at the Oscars After Party is ageless and she shows a woman of age how to wear it effortlessly. The entire look is everything, and I definitely will be trying this style out. If you have a wig, you can recreate this look easily and in under 20 minutes. Lupita Nyongo

Lupita Nyong’o keeps giving us beautiful hairstyles which exhibit her natural tresses versatility when she shows up on any carpet. This year at the Oscars, she looks radiant in her metallic dress and her regal Goddess Braided style. Women who are rocking natural or relaxed hair can easily recreate this hairstyle for a special occasion. The gold thread adds the perfect touch to it. I like to think this style is a take on the Goddess Braids. Lupita’s style is a looser look, but you can recreate this look based on your preference. Helen Mirren

Helen Mirren represents for all women over fifty who know how to celebrate their beauty without making it look hard. Her confidence is on a million as she walks the red carpet and, not only does she look amazing in her dress, but her hair is the perfect contrast. The simplicity of her hairstyle makes it easy for anyone to recreate it. I think the key to this hairstyle is to make sure you get a good haircut to show the hair correctly. Get a trim on a regular basis if you are growing out your pixie cut. If you read my other articles, you will know I think @gorgeousingrey is the bomb! In a recent blog, she gives tips on how to get rid of the yellowish tint in gray hair. Take a read and let me know if it helps you with your hair. Taraji P. Henson

Taraji P. Henson strolled the Oscars red carpet giving us the leg, face, and her signature bob hairstyle! I just want to scream “Yes Taraji! Serve boo!” The thing about style is once you find what works you stick with it. Taraji rocks a bob like no one else, and I love how she will switch it up by adding color or volume. You can easily rock this look by purchasing a wig from Private Label Extensions and customize it to the length and color you desire. In my opinion, the key to making sure your wig looks natural is to follow a few rules. The following list will help you look as if you are about to walk your red carpet event. Let's get this wig together!

Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence never gets uptight about her style. I think she stays true to who she is while still looking amazing on the Oscars red carpet. Hollywood usually sets the standards, but she doesn't pay much attention to them and does her own thing. I love a rebel! Her hair is giving me waves for days! Honestly, I love it when she gives us a softer side of her because I always picture her as the tough chick. She reminds us that she is the perfect combination of tough and soft at the same time. I love it! If you want to get the same body waves she’s wearing on the red carpet; it’s as simple as purchasing a curling wand and adding as many waves as you want! Make sure you use a holding spray to keep your waves in place.
