Essence Street Style Festival: The Flyest Looks

Essence Street Style Festival: The Flyest Looks

What it is and The Best Looks

Ever since hearing about Essence fest, I’ve wanted to go. Every time one of my friends attended, they would talk about the ambiance in New Orleans and how it was the perfect place to host an event like Essence fest. Where better to host a FUBU event than in a setting with so much black ancestral influence? At first, I thought the annual essence festival in NO was the only event hosted by Essence. I couldn’t have been more wrong. They have tons of events and festivals that they host where many people from all over the country show off their looks. Some of the hottest and most fly looks have come from the people that attend these events! For years, Essence has been a platform that showcases all things black beauty, and lifestyle. Within the past few years, Essence has continued to create and host events that showcase the hottest black celebrities, styles, hairstyles and more. One event that has continuously caught my eye is the Essence Street Style Festival. This festival is full of vendors, performers, influencers and more. This year, they hosted the festival in Brooklyn, and there were so many beautiful looks. Let’s get into them.

What Is Essence Street Style Festival

Essence Street Style Festival has been running for four years. It used to be free, but since it’s gain in popularity, the event is now ticketed. However, despite it being ticketed, it’s not expensive to attend. The cost this year was about $20-$25. See! Inexpensive and fun! The event this year was noted in Brooklyn, but there’s been talk about it moving to a different city next year. It would be similar to a tour event. The event is primarily meant to diversify what they can offer to the community. The director of events at Essence, Candace Montgomery, has talked about the importance of street style and allowing people to bring their visions to life. This past event was hosted by Amanda Seales, with performers Teyana Taylor and Yemi Alade. Also, celebrity chef Kelis was at the event as well. This event is also famous for having some key sponsors such as Nike, Macy’s and SheaMoisture. Overall, this event is a tribute to fashion, style, and influence curated by majority black women. It’s the place to be for some inspiration on looks and styles!
Fly Hair And Beauty Looks! Some of the best looks this year have come from the events hosted by Essence. When I went to the Essence fest last year, I saw some of the most beauty and hair looks imaginable. I was overwhelmed because everyone looked so beautiful. No matter where I went, I saw beautiful faces with outstanding hairstyles. Some of these hairstyles seemed impossible to recreate, but some of them seemed simple. I have about four favorite looks from the Essence Street Style Festival that I want to share with you!

Amanda Seales’ High Ponytail

Amanda Seales was seen at this year’s festival wearing a high ponytail. She’s always been known for wearing blonde hair, but at this festival, she brought her Insecure character “Tiffany” to life. She wore a dreaded high ponytail. The tail part of the ponytail looks like it was created with extensions, probably yarn material. She looked amazing! To recreate this look, there are some things you’ll need. First, you’ll need some edge control. To make high ponytails, you can use extensions. For me, I like to use braiding hair and some rubber bands to create the look I desire. Slick up that hair and get your ponytail poppin’!

Kelis’ Colorful Dreads

Kelis was at the event receiving an award and wearing some of the most colorful dreads! She is known for having a shortcut with shaved sides. She’s also known for having colorful hairstyles at most of her appearances. The colorful dreads were a fantastic way for her to express herself in her most authentic way. To achieve this look, you can get some dreaded synthetic crochet. Make sure you get the appropriate colors that you want. Another way to complete this look would be to have someone install some faux locs for you.

The Looks Of The People!

Apart from the celebrities seen at this Essence event, some everyday people slayed their looks. First, I want to recognize the kids at the festival that stole the show! Many of the children at the events had natural hairstyles that we adore! On little black girl had two puffs with accessories to complete the look. Another girl had a slick back with a puffy ponytail. Another child had her hair completely out, styled in a completely natural way. Some other people at the festival made themselves stand out with the beauty and hair looks they wore. One woman has lavender colored hair that can be easily recreated with some human hair kinky straight extensions. She paired the hair look with a natural, soft earthy makeup look along with a bold eyeliner look. These looks were just a glimpse into the beauty of the festival. One look that mainly stuck with me was a braided look with a beret. This woman wore a red beret with red lipstick and braided her braids into a messy french braid. Love, love, love this look so much!

Essence Festival Love!

All in all, we love the looks that come from any festival but particularly the Essence festivals. At this year’s street style fest, we saw all the greatest hair looks from celebrities and attendees. If you’re looking for some hair inspiration, don’t hesitate to head to a festival and get all the inspiration you need. I love going to these festivals, and I’m always happy to see how Essence tries to give everyone a platform. It doesn’t matter whether you’re looking to try out a new hairstyle, or a new beauty look, a festival might be the place for you. Try keeping up with Essences’ festival dates to see it in real life. Black Girls Rock Awards Had Totally Rocking Hair; Here are A Few Looks

Black Girls Rock Awards Had Totally Rocking Hair; Here are A Few Looks

Black Girls Rock!

One of the biggest nights in television honoring all things ‘black girl magic’ and the inspirational women that have paved the way in so many industries. Honoring trailblazers like Ava DuVernay, Janet Jackson, Tarana Burke, and Lena Waithe, the evening was star-studded and full of style. There is never a thing such as too daring when it comes to black women and their hair. The Black Girls Rock awards show how black women set the standards and trends in beauty.

Hairstyles We Loved

The red carpet at the awards show was full of stylish wardrobe and head-turning hairdos. These were some of our favorite hairstyles from the Black Girls Rock Awards.

Mary J. Blige

One of our favorite songstresses graced the red carpet with a sleek bun. Sleek buns are great for any occasion, whether it’s a casual lunch date or a formal event. If the sleekness of the bun wasn’t enough, Mary spiced up her look with blonde highlights. The blonde gave the simple hairstyle some flair and made her pop out during the night. Her hairstyle proves that less is more.

Ciara

Known to switch it up from long tresses to braids, Ciara worked the Black Girls Rock red carpet this year and traded her long, wavy tresses. The singer and dancer rocked a shoulder length bob streaked with blonde highlights. The hairstyle was complete with a middle part and a few subtle curls to add volume. Ciara never misses a beat when it comes to selecting the right hairstyles for the occasion.

Queen Latifah

The queen and host of the 2018 Black Girls Rock Awards showed up with a new look for the night. Queen Latifah is known for her blonde hair and usually rocking a sleek ponytail, she sported a half up and half down hairstyle. This hairstyle is such a favorite because it provides the perfect balance of casual and formal. With some curls stretching past her shoulders, Queen Latifah’s look was a head turner. It looks like she lightened up her blonde for a pop of color which we loved!

Amandla Stenberg

In the words of Jay-Z “This fro that I rock, got no perm in it.” Au Naturale on the carpet, Amandla rocked her natural hair with a curly fro. Simple and making a statement, Stenberg flaunted her coils and curls on the carpet. Remember when the actress did the big chop? The length is showing, and her hair is flourishing in its natural state. Awards show honoring the magic of black girls everywhere was the perfect place to showcase her natural fro.

Stormi Reid

Black girl magic meets puff magic on the red carpet. We love a sleek updo ad the young actress, Stormi Reid did not disappoint. We all know how natural styles can be frustrating to execute, but this teen star made it look effortless. The puff was full of defined curls, and the edges were sleek and laid to perfection. It’s refreshing to see young black women embracing more of their natural hair on red carpets and showing that simple can be beautiful.

Leah Jenea

People always say blondes have more fun and this songstress rocked one of our favorite hairstyles from the 2018 Black Girls Rock Awards red carpet. The shortcut with the perfect finger waves is a bold look, and Leah Jenea did not disappoint. We love to see a woman being courageous with her hair choices, and this platinum blonde is the definition of cutting edge and daring.

Jazmine Sullivan

The ladies did not come to play on the red carpet, and Jazmine Sullivan didn’t half step at all. Bobs are always in season no matter the length or hair pattern. Sullivan rocked a short, straight neck length bob with a middle part. This was a hairstyle we loved for many reasons. The simplicity of the short bob compliments any outfit no matter the occasion. The jet black color makes a bold statement and is hard to look away from and pops with any outfit color.

Naomi Campbell

The supermodel phenom can do no wrong when it comes to fashion and hair. Whether it’s a short bob, straight long tresses with a middle part, or a sleek bun, she rocks everything effortlessly. The red carpet at the awards was no different, Naomi graced the carpet with a wavy look. The curls were beach ready with the bangs to match. The shoulder length style was a top look of the night on the carpet.

Misty Copeland

We love a sleek ponytail! Most importantly, we enjoy a chic ponytail that has a lot of volume and definition. Copeland hit the red carpet with her hair slicked back into a “fluffy” ponytail that hung down her back. This style is quick to do and easy to maintain when you’re living life on the go, as the professional ballerina often does. The sleek ponytail gives such a formal look no matter the occasion and is a crowd favorite. If your hair is long enough to be pulled back, grab your go-to products and place it in a ponytail to execute this look. Fluff your hair out with your hands or with a styling brush for the complete look. If you need to add more length or desire more volume, head to your local beauty supply store for some extension options. There’s so many to choose from when it comes to styles and color, get creative!

Honorable Mention: Beverly Bond

The founder of the Black Girls Rock Awards and the literal holder of the trademarked phrase “black girl magic,” Beverly Bond did not disappoint. With a short, feathered hair look Bond showed us that it didn’t matter the length of the hair. It’s all about how you rock it, and she slayed during the entire ceremony. If you’ve ever considered doing the big chop then seeing her hairstyle will help you come to a solid decision about cutting your hair.

We Love Red Carpets

Watching our favorite women grace the red carpets and stages during award ceremonies is an exciting time. They inspire us for our next event or simply our next hairstyle for the work week. The versatility of the red carpet during Black Girls Rocks Awards is overwhelming and exciting to see. It reminds you that no color is too bold or too bright. There is no harm in switching up your style within the same month or even the same week.

Versatility is Power

The ladies on the red carpet showed the different ways you can rock a red carpet and make even the most straightforward style look formal. Each woman served looks and continue to be trendsetters no matter the occasion.

Our Favorite Funky Looks from Afropunk in 2018

Our Favorite Funky Looks from Afropunk in 2018

An Afropunk to Remember! Check Out Our Favorite Looks from Afropunk

When it comes down to wacky hairstyles, vibrant clothing, and fantastic music, I think festivals are all of our hidden weaknesses. The most popular music festival of the year is Coachella, but the most memorable must be Afro-punk. Last weekend thousands of people came into Brooklyn's Commodore Barry Park for one of a kind music festival. Afro-punk revolves around hairstyles, clothing, and culture related to Afrocentrism. Of course, everyone is welcome, but the festival has curated space for African-American people from various backgrounds to celebrate black music, fashion, hair, and beauty in the most unapologetic way. 2018 marks it's 13-year anniversary, and its attendees were looking as beautiful and happier as ever. The musical side included star performances by Erykah Badu, Daniel Caesar, Miguel, Janelle Monáe, and many more. And although the music is fantastic, it has no competition against all the stylish and beautiful people who dress to impress at this festival. When people say they go to Afro-punk only to watch the performances, I know they must be kidding. The hairstyles, food, looks, and energy are what downright separates this festival from all the rest. What we love about Afro-punk the most is the freedom it allows us to have and show to others. From the fashion which includes flower crowns, body glitter, and ruffle dresses to the natural hairstyles like cornrows, Afros, dreadlocks, and braids. If you have the confidence and personality like we know you do then, you'll be wanting to buy your ticket for next year's event by the end of this post! But if you don't believe how fantastic this festival can be then, we'll have to show you for yourself. Here's a list of our favorite looks from Afropunk 2018, as well as some specific attendees who did their best to stand out from the crowd!

Flower Child

The use of flowers this year at Afropunk is genuinely insane. Let me start by saying I never knew how beautiful, sunflowers, daisies, or roses could be on one person's head. Many women and men incorporate these stunning plants as a part of their ensemble every time at this festival. But this year was a little different our favorite flower child must go to @organicroyalty. This beautiful woman takes advantage of the use of her dreads and creates a high ponytail that resembles a bouquet of flowers. This hairstyle is just stunning and will catch your attention in a matter of seconds. She compliments the look by adding matching sunflower earrings that you can also spot from a mile away. Other attendees had a beautiful use of these golden plants as well. Some would place them sparingly throughout their Afro, and the men would put them inside of their beards. These looks are enough to make any festival newcomer fall in love. Remember that these flowers are not only for your hair, but people also incorporate these beauties in their wardrobe as well. The creativity this year was off the charts, and you can make many of these looks yourself with a simple D.I.Y. So, if you plan on attending Afro-punk next year, you should know flowers will never go out of style.

Head and Face Jewelry

If you're thinking about attending Afro-punk and going out with a bang, you cannot forget to wear some attractive jewelry. It seems like this year head jewels were the main attraction. You could find attendees rocking glitzy, sequent, or sparkly chains on their head. Some concertgoers would even go the extra mile and attach their head ware onto the nose rings giving off an extra Afrocentric look. If you are a fan of Game of Thrones, then you know exactly how cool this accessory can be on someone. The good thing about it is that this jewelry can come in the regular form or an elaborate style that you wear for individual concerts and certain festivals. Hair chains are perfect for those of you who don't want to wear the traditional flower crowns. The accessory universally looks best when you wear it over a center part or have bangs covering the forehead. Oversize nose rings are also a big show peace at Afro-punk, especially when it connects to your earring or other face jewelry. Whether you have a small loop through your nostril, a nose cuff, or even a septum piercing the little details complete an outfit. Bhindis, gems, and other bohemian accents look beautiful on the festival attendees. So if you need some inspiration check out these pics of our favorite chain jewelry looks this year at Afropunk.

Afros

Of course, if you're going to Afropunk the one thing that you're going to see the most are Afros. The fro style originated in the mid-1960s and became most popular during the Black Panther movement. During the 1970's this hairstyle was a statement look for African-Americans, which is why it is a go-to look for Afropunk. It is a beautiful sight to see all these fantastic people rocking their natural curls to their fullest extent. The Afros this year came in so many different shapes, textures, and colors. From blonde curly wigs to black floral ones, any and everyone rocking an Afro style look merely beautiful in them. Whether you wear yours in bangs, an updo, or wild and free, this is one festival where no one would dare to judge you. When it comes to choosing the perfect hairstyle for Afro-punk, there should be no need to worry. Check out these impressive Afro looks from this year's festival.

Bantu Knots

It's crazy to think that some people only wear Bantu knots as a heat-free styling method for natural hair. But this year a lot of women at Coachella or taking it back to the 90s and rocking Bantu knots as their go-to hairstyle. This look is a perfect style to try on the day of the event; you can do it within minutes and with ease. Some attendees were adding quirky jewels and accessories to the style to make it pop out more. This style looks very ethnic and is suitable for this kind of festival. Whether you want to rock them all over your head, or just put a few knots in the front, you are sure to stand out from the crowd. If you want to spice up this look, try adding cornrows in between the sections, or insert extensions to make the knots appear thicker. My favorite style is when the parts are angled or zigzag this creates an edgier look. The great thing about choosing this hairstyle is that you have a two in one choice. Since this festival is for two days, you can rock Bantu knots for one day and a beautiful twist out of the other. If you do it the correct way, the curl pattern is spiral and will look jaw dropping. Now the only thing left to do is figure out your rocking outfit choices. Give this hairstyle a try if you plan on attending Afropunk next year.

African Print

Again, since Afro-punk is a threshold for black excellence you better believe that concert goers will be rocking some beautiful African prints. The universal way to wear these patterns is with jeans or in a dress. Some even go the extra mile and wrap their hair in the same fabric as their outfit. Our favorite looks from Afro-punk must be the maxi oversized African print skirts. These skirts came in many eye-catching colors and designs that will make you say OMG a million times over. I know that most concertgoers try to show off as much skin as possible, but they still manage to make these big skirts look sexy. You can pair them with matching crop tops, bandeau, even a see-through lace or crochet bra. I've also seen confident ladies cut a big slit on the side showing a lot of thighs and adding a spicy touch to the look. As for the makeup choices they are nothing short of vibrant. Mixing bright purple, green, or blue lipstick to match their outfit patterns makes them even more eye-catching. No matter how you decide to dress it up, it seems like African print can do no wrong.

Our Personal Favorites!

Yaaserwaah Akuoku

Yaaserwaah Akuoku is a wearable art designer. She is an artist/designer who loves to display her work in a wearable form all over her body. You could spot her from a mile away during Afropunk with the words "Everything Black Matters" on her skin. Since her first love and interest is in fashion, it was a piece of cake for her to create a unique look. She says her outfit is a piece that focuses on self-reflection. Well, all we can say is wow Yaaserwaah we love it and keep slaying!

Sade Smith

Sade Smith is a 20-year-old first timer at Afropunk and came out with a bang. She creates an outfit that resembles the statue of liberty but with a little twist of Afrocentrism. Sade says, "there is a lot of oppression that still goes on for black people, so what better way to represent that than being the statue of liberty." She creates a beautiful white rose crown and instead of a torch with a flame, Sade is holding a black power fist that symbolizes and represents her ancestors. We love all the hidden meanings and historical background her look gives us. Great job Sade, we can't wait to see what other looks you create for future festivals to come.

Ebonee Davis

Ebonee Davis is a 25-year-old model who is from the Midwest and a reoccurring Afropunk goer. She says that she is a 70's girl at heart and that shows plenty in her outfit choice this year. Let's start with Ebonee's luscious curls. She is sporting an all-natural afro that frames her face very well. She says her hair is growing a lot within the past year and can't wait to see its growth for the next festival. The aesthetic Ebonee is going for was a smooth natural, breezy kind of flow and we can say she successfully conquers that essence. Her outfit was a risky lace and lavender matching top and bottoms. Although it was more on the revealing side, she still manages to keep it classy by wearing minimal makeup and throwing on small silver hoop earrings. We love everything about this look, and if you have the right confidence, we are sure many of you can pull this style off as well.

What Is Your Favorite Looks from Afropunk?

As you can see Afro-punk is a festival that you do not want to miss. The fantastic music and artist lineup is enough to reel you inside. But what keeps you coming back year after year is the unique and beautiful people you will see and meet. Although we may have missed out on some more spectacular looks, we hope this encourages you to find some on your own. If you want to witness the fantastic hairstyles and outfit choices for yourself, you should check out Instagram's hashtags for Afro-punk. The internet does a tremendous job of making you feel like you were right there on the lawn grass soaking up all the beautiful moments. This two-day festival is one for the books, and after seeing all the stunning looks, I can't wait to go to the next one. If you are experiencing any creative block, we suggest you go to a concert or festival to ignite some inspiration. Luckily if you live in Atlanta, there will be an Afro-punk Festival in the fall season starting October. Make sure you check out their official website for any scheduling details and artist lineups. Did you go to Afropunk this year? If so we want to know what your favorite look is from the event. Let us know your thoughts in the comment section down below.

Favorite Hairstyles on the Red Carpet at the 2018 Espy Awards

Favorite Hairstyles on the Red Carpet at the 2018 Espy Awards

Red Carpet At Its Finest

The 2018 Espy Awards on Wednesday in Los Angeles has all the leaders in sports and entertainment gracing the red carpet. I am so excited to take a peep into the athletic world and get a sense of the individual styles of the athletes we watch on television and at live events. For this award show, I must admit the stars cleaned up nice and I notice the women kept their hair simple. I love the fact that they kept it easy because I believe a lot of the styles allow us to appreciate the total look. Let's check out some of the red carpet looks below!

Women Who Rocked It At The Espys

Olivia Holt

Olivia is an American actress who is on the Disney channel. I must admit this style she wore matures her and showcases her as the multi-talented artist she is. She’s wearing a sleek look for Espy awards. Her slicked-back style is hassle-free and the perfect style for a short bob like hers. The smooth and sleek style is a red carpet favorite. The key to getting this look is to use a styling serum or gel to create and maintain the look. Here are some of our favorite styling products to replicate the hairstyle: Grab your 12” Brazilian Silky Straight bundles from Private Label Extensions if your hair is a little shorter and you want to add length. If you have shorter hair, like a pixie cut, the sleek look will look amazing!

Kayla Nicole

Kayla is the girlfriend of Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. Sis did it right! Her bundles are beautiful, but they don’t take over her entire look. You are only a few bundles away from getting the same look she wore on the red carpet! Her hair is just effortless. Here are some tips on how to get the most out of a hairstyle like this one:

Tip #1

You can easily find a quality wig with a nice body wave to it or you can add curls using a curling wand.

Tip #2

A sew-in is another option. Just make sure your foundation braids are small and neat to allow for a smooth look.

Tip #3

Finish off your style with light hair oil. The ones in the Organix hair care line are perfect. The hair needs to have a nice shine to it.

Tip #4

Keep the curls under control by using a few bobby pins strategically around the crown of the head. Notice she has some hair slightly pinned back and some hair gracefully framing her face.

Chloe Kim

Chloe looks so young and fun! Her blonde locks have the right amount of dimension. Her hair length is past her shoulders, and I love the blunt cut. Once you purchase your Russian Blonde extensions and install them, you can color and cut them just like hers.

Color Your Bundles

Purchase your Russian Blonde extensions and get ready to add in color to them using the process below:

Supplies

  • Loreal hi-color (ash blonde)
  • 40 volume developer
  • Olaplex #1

Step #1

Mix the ash blonde, developer, and olapex together

Step #2

Apply the mixture to your extensions from root to tip

Step #3

Wrap in foil to allow it to process

Step #4

Repeat the above steps for the frontal

Step #5

Allow the frontal to process from 25-35 minutes

Step #6

Shampoo and condition the extensions

Step #7

Allow extensions to air-dry or use a blow dryer Once your extensions are dry, you can make your wig. Once your wig is complete, here’s how to blunt cut it to look like Chloe’s:

Step #1

Brush any tangles out of your hair

Step #2

Part your hair at its natural part

Step #3

Divide the hair into two sections

Step #4

Use an elastic to put each side up in a ponytail

Step #5

Use a second elastic to mark where you want to cut the ponytail

Step #6

Cut your hair right above the elastic

Step #7

Make sure each side is even

Step #8

Remove the elastics from the ponytails

Step #9

Section the very back of your hair off from the rest of your hair

Step #10

Clip the rest of your hair up

Step #11

Comb your hair straight and pull your hair taut with your fingers

Step #12

Slide down to the end and cut off any jagged edges

Step #13

Use the point of your scissors to remove some of the bulk and make it more natural

Step #14

Flat iron your hair to see how the cut looks and make any adjustments

Alexandra Raisman

Alexandra is an Olympic gold medal gymnast who recently was a member of the 2016 Olympic gymnast team. She looks gorgeous in her white floor length gown. The most stunning part of her look, for me, is her hair. Her waves wave “Hey girl” to you as they cascade over her shoulder. I love the center part and how the right side of her hair is behind her ear. Want your hair to look this flawless? Check out my tips below: If you want to create your waves using a shortcut you can purchase your Brazilian loose waves bundles and install them as a sew-in or make a wig. Private Label has tons of information on how to achieve both so check out some of our articles here on the site. If your hair is at length you desire and you want to add these beautiful waves, I’m going to help you out. Here’s how to create them in a few easy steps:

Step #1

Brush out any tangles and separate your hair into two sides

Step #2

Use your curling iron or a curling rod to curl a small section at a time

Step #3

Wrap your hair around the iron and let sit for about 5 seconds

Step #4

Once the curl is in place, don’t manipulate it until you are ready to style your entire head

Step #5

You are going to want tight curls so make sure you apply enough heat to seal in the wave pattern (please don’t keep it on your hair too long to avoid damage)

Step #6

Once you get to the top of your head curl a bit looser because you want body on the ends and not on the top of your head

Step #7

Part your hair in a center part and curl the hairline going backward

Step #8

Use a styling serum or gel to smooth back one side of your hair

Step #9

Once it is smooth, use a few hairpins (ones that match your hair color) and pin the hair in place

Step #10

Blend all your hair to the back and on one side making sure to use hairspray to keep the waves in place.

Ciara

Ciara shows us how to stand out while she’s standing next to the handsome Russell Wilson. Although she’s not in the sports industry, she serves as a beautiful companion to the quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks. Ciara accented her golden yellow dress with a neat wavy ponytail. Learn how to create a perfect ponytail before so make sure you go check the article out. Below is a shopping list to recreate her look, and you’ll be able to get a lot of use out of the extensions, so it’s a significant investment.

Supplies

  • Edge control
  • Brush
  • Elastic bands
  • Brazilian Body Wave extensions in 20”, 22”, and 24”

Jordyn Wieber

Jordyn is an Olympic gold medal gymnast who no longer participates in the sport since 2015. She opted for a ponytail as well this year. Her dark hair worked well with her navy beaded dress she wore for the event. You can check out our ponytail tutorials on the site.

Athletes Clean Up Nice

As I stated earlier athletes clean up nice. From athletes to girlfriends and wives, the women showed up on the red carpet. The men looked nice as well. It’s good to see our favorite stars differently. Comment below and let us know which style you liked the most!

Essence Fest 2018: Hair Looks We Loved and Hated

Essence Fest 2018: Hair Looks We Loved and Hated
It’s festival season, and Essence magazine did not come to play! Every summer, Essence Magazine joins the fun in festivals and has its coveted Essence Fest celebrating black women, black business, black culture and most of all black style. This year was no different than the others as significant brands, businesswomen, celebrities, and influencers joined the fun to give the people what they love the most! However, just like we love Essence Magazine and their annual Essence Fest, we love their looks! So in celebration of the many styles, we are pinpointing the Essence Fest 2018 hair looks we love! Yes, it was that much black girl magic and slayage walking around to compile some favorites and some tools on how you can get the look yourself. Vivid colors, tons of energy and bright smiles painted the scene for the fun-filled weekend, but one thing that stood out the most was the variety of hairstyles that roamed the streets of New Orleans. It was as if everyone who showed up knew that they had to bring their A game and with much anticipation, these women did not support. While we cannot cover every hairstyle, we can pick our top 5 favorites that seemed to stand out from the rest. From braids to long full weaves, to Bantu knots and even a few updo’s here and there, it was indeed a treat for everybody. So if you are headed on vacation soon, and you are in need of some serious hair inspo, look no further!
Maura Chanz Spelman Graduate, self-starter, actress, media guru and overall beauty Maura Chanz was of course in attendance to celebrate the festivities. If you have not followed her on Instagram, what are you waiting for? Not only is she part of the production process for television shows such as Black Lightning and OWN’s Love Is, but she is a risk taker when it comes to her hair. Typically, she can be caught sporting her big natural afro, but for Essence Fest, she pulled out all of the stops and went bold with braided Bantu knots! Yes, braided Bantu knots that were larger than life and stole the show on my Instagram feed. Love this look that her hair braider created? Here is what you need to get a similar look: Kanekalon braiding hair Rattail comb Clips Soft brush Styling Gel Oil Sheen Rubber bands
Get The Look To get the look is a lot simpler than it may seem, but that is the beauty of how intricate it looks! In a few simple steps, this is where you begin: Step 1: Pre part your Bantu knot sections larger than you normally would and for each section use a bit of styling gel to hold it in place. Step 2: Use the rubber band method to hold the hair in place but do not put the rubber bands on the base of your hair too tight! Step 3: Take a medium sized piece of braiding hair and feed it into the base of one of your sections. Treat this as if you were doing box braids! Step 4: Once you have all of your plaits take the one closest to the crown of your head and begin to make the knot. Working from the inside out gives your hands more room to work and knot the rest of your head. Step 5: Take another rubber band to secure the base of the Bantu knot for extra security. Step 6: Spray lightly with oil sheen and you that is it! Will you be trying Maura’s Essence Fest look?
Monique Rodriguez CEO of Mielle Organics Natural hair girls, where are you? If you have roamed the natural hair aisles of Target, then you may know exactly where I am going with this one! The biggest talk of the town at Essence Fest was Mielle Organics and its prominent takeover. Seriously, Mielle did not come to play when it came to product activation, publicity, social marketing, and grassroots advertising, but neither did the CEO, Monique Rodriguez. Monique is a beyond obvious choice for the Essence Fest 2018 looks we love because she came picture and product ready! Not only were her outfits custom designed by her and then made by her mother but her hair differed in styles each day. My favorite look of the weekend-long event, however, was when she debuted her silk pants and wrapped top ensemble with a half braided do and long loose curls in the back. Monique adorned each braid with hair jewels and rings for a personal touch as well! This look is not hard to get as long as you know how to cornrow and even if you don’t flat twists can be used as an alternate. To get this look will take under an hour and all you will need are: Comb Edge control Rubber bands Curling iron (if hair is straight) Clip-ins (if you want/need more length) Again, these steps are so easy and are definitely customizable! There is no need to stick to Monique’s exact pattern, and there is no need to straighten your hair or wear a straight style if you do not want to! Make it your own!
Issa Rae Aside from her yellow jumpsuit stealing the show and helping us gather our lives, Issa Rae had heads turning when she hit the city. The flat twist style complete with a faux loc bun was not only Essence Fest worthy but is a look that can be worn in the office or on vacation. The best part about this style is that it also can show off your face for a sweet beat or a natural slay. Either way, this is something that our natural hair girls should try when braids and twists don’t make the cut. To get this style is a bit intricate but doable if you take the time because not only does it look amazing but it will last you a few weeks if you take care of it correctly. The tools that you need are: Hair clips Rattail comb Hair gel (like eco styler) Hairspray Brush Premade faux locs Bobby pins Crochet needle Socks the color of your hair
Get The Look Step 1: Make sure that your hair is clean from shampoo and conditioner. Detangle with a wide tooth comb as well. Step 2: When your hair is damp, begin to flat twist back in a pattern that suits your liking! When flat twisting, use a bit of eco styler on each piece. When done flat twisting, set with a silk scarf and let dry before proceeding to the faux locs. Step 3: Gather your flat twists where they meet and begin to pin them down as flat as possible so that the base is sturdy. Step 4: When you know that the base of the flat twists is strong, begin to crochet the premade faux locs in a circular motion starting from the middle on out. You do not want to put too many but just enough to form a sturdy bun. Step 5: Take your socks and form a large enough “donut” that covers your handy work. No one should be able to see where you crochet and faux locs begin. Step 6: If necessary, cut the locs so that it forms neatly around the donut. Cover every piece of the donut until you have the bun look desired. Now I know this style may take some practice, but I can promise you that everyone will wonder how and where you got your hair done. So if any asks, tell them Issa Rae’s 2018 Essence Fest inspired you!
Ella Mai The “Boo’d Up” singer is making some strides right? It is safe to say that the whole world loves budding singer Ella Mai and her simplistic style. She came to Essence Fest as she usually does, dressed comfy with a super cute hairstyle to match. In one image where she took a picture with R&B group Xscape, Ella is pictured wearing a sleek high ponytail that has loose curls to perfection. I think the biggest thing that many of us love about Ella Mai is that she goes with the less is more look. She truly allows her beauty to shine through as she is often pictured fresh-faced and smiling. Her high ponytail is probably one of the easiest looks to do, especially when you are looking for a style that is convenient and easy to maintain. Seeing Ella show up to Essence Fest with this look was not only major hair inspo but made some of us want to place an order for Mongolian curly as soon as possible.
Get The Look To get this style you probably have all of the products needed at home, so your best bet if you do not have the length is to get your hands on some extensions that match your hair texture. Step 1: Sleek your hair up a little bit behind the crown of your head. Seriously, gather those edges and get them high, but not too tight. Step 2: If you do not have the length take the hair that is left and braid it securely in a plait. Step 3: Take your extensions and wrap it around the base of your plait, ensuring that it is snug and secure. The idea for this style is to have it as natural but dramatic as possible, so when you are wrapping be sure to mimic your hair density to keep it as realistic as possible. Step 4: Secure the weft with bobby pins and then take a piece of hair (about the width of your index and ring finger) and wrap it around the base of the ponytail. Step 5: Lay your edges with edge control and a scarf! This style is so easy to recreate and is possibly something that can become your staple when needed. Thanks, Ella for being one of the Essence Fest 2018 hair looks!
Janet Jackson Last but never least, we have the queen of pop! Janet Jackson of course. Now, we know that Janet is known for her changing hair, compelling style and the way she commands a room and it is safe to say that she is still following through on that expectation. This past weekend, Janet was able to grace us with her presence and perform at Essence Fest! Aside from this once in a lifetime event, she brought something else to the stage, and that is a long, dramatic and high ponytail. Clearly, the high pony is making a comeback, and I know that all of our ponytail dreams are coming true through this one. Janet pulled out all of the stops as she continued to sport this look not only for dramatics but we are sure for convenience too. Let’s not forget that Janet is a mom now and we are positive that this style is one of the many ways that she cuts down on time in the dressing room to have more time with her little one. No matter the reason, we love this look on Janet! This ponytail look differs from Ella Mai’s ponytail because it offers you the vivid, dramatic effort and of course a flattering pop of color. The long brown ponytail did not only have highlights of other shades of brown but also had lively shades of blonde that are just right for summer festival season. Do you want this look? We thought you would! All you will need are: Gel Kanekalon braiding hair Soft bristle brush Ponytail holder Satin scarf
Get The Look The steps which mimic Ella Mai’s high ponytail are similar but vary regarding your ponytail: Step 1: Sleek your hair up to the crown of your head. Seriously, gather those edges and get them high, but not too tight. Step 2: Take the hair that is left and braid it securely in a plaited bun. Step 3: Take your braiding hair to create a ponytail by taking a ponytail holder and securing it in the middle of the braiding hair. On each end, you should have equal lengths. Once tight, tug on each end to feather the end pieces. Step 4: Get the braiding hair and wrap it around the base of your plait, ensuring that it is snug and secure. Step 5: Make sure your plaited bun is in the center of the ponytail, fluff, and cover as needed. Step 6: For extra security, secure the ponytail with bobby pins and then take a piece of hair (about the width of your index and ring finger) and wrap it around the base of the ponytail. Step 7: Lay your edges with edge control and a scarf! For those who love a good ponytail and dramatics, this style is for you. The main thing to remember is that you do not want to pull your hair too tight. If you are going for the super snatched look, that is what laying your edges are for. Trust us; you do not want to overstress your follicles.
Hair: The Best Accessory No Matter The Occasion Imagine yourself hitting Essence Fest next summer or your vacation in a few weeks rocking these looks, an Instagram worthy moment right? Do not be afraid to try new things when it comes to your hair. Some of the biggest and best names in attendance did, and now we cannot stop talking about them. Hair is your best accessory regardless of the occasion and making it work for you is what gets eyes looking and necks turning. Think about it, if you want to make a statement, the best way to do it is through your hair. By the use of colors and textures, you can always be the next best hair inspo, just as long as you can make it your own. Sure, styles get recycled, but we have to remember that no one is the first to do anything! So, if you want to try something, go for it because you never know, you could end up in an article talking about just how bomb your hair slay is.

2018 BET Awards Looks We Loved and Hated

2018 BET Awards Looks We Loved and Hated

Red Carpets and Award Shows for Style Inspo

The red carpets for award shows are one of the most exciting things to witness. The excitement of seeing what your favorite celebrity or entertainer will arrive wearing or how they will switch their hair up for the occasion is always a thrill. While award shows are entertaining, sometimes it’s the red carpet that draws viewers attention the most. From aspiring style gurus or people wanting to switch their looks up, it’s always great to pull inspiration from your favorite celebrities. The red carpet allows stars to show off their personality or even work with new designers or boutiques and showcase their work. With this year’s BET Awards taking place in the fictional world of “Blackanda,” fans and viewers were eager to see what their favorite celebrities and entertainers would pull off this year.

Looks We Loved From The BET Awards

Blac Chyna

While her choice of outfit was a bit risque, Chyna’s platinum finger waves was a head turner and a style to add to your Pinterest board. A very chic and classy look, the finger waves is a perfect summer style and was great to sport in the LA heat. The platinum color was a hit and went well with her skin tone.

Janelle Monae

What’s a red carpet without making a statement? Janelle showed up in a decked out rainbow dress to celebrate LGBT Pride Month. Her outfit had social media in a frenzy and was one of the most talked about costumes of the night. The singer’s skirt had every color of the LGBT flag, and it was a piece you could not look away from.

Serayah

The “Empire” star came on the scene prepared to slay and turn heads. This was a golden look of the night, literally. The actress/singer arrived on the BET Carpet with a gold skirt, and top ensemble complimented by a ‘Storm’ inspired bob. The platinum color hair served as the perfect accessory to her outfit, and it was a favorite look from the night.

Migos

The rap trio has come a long way with their fashion, and it’s impressive to watch their style develop. Fans and viewers enjoyed The Migos choice of dress for the night, and the group stayed very casual yet dressy. True to their music, The Migos are known to hop on the scene in Versace.

Tyra Banks

Of course, we expect the top model to slay on every occasion, and the BET Awards was no different for Ms. Banks. Tyra showed up on the carpet with a nicely cut bob accented with blonde highlights, perfect for the summer time and LA heat. Her jumpsuit was very intricate and accentuated every curve, the color was a goldish-nude and complemented her skin tone very well. Her looks were one that kept social media talking for days.

Keyshia Kaoir

Keyshia arrived on the BET Red carpet with a sleek high bun that people talked about for days. Usually, an elegant bun isn’t something that everyone can maintain, especially in the summertime with the extreme heat. For Keyshia, not one hair was out of place, and the bun was able to give her an effortless yet classy look for the awards that night.

Erica Ash

One of the reasons Erica’s look was a win for the BET Awards is because she stayed on the theme for “Blackanda.” Arriving on the red carpet with a dress, bold and vibrant colors as well as tribal patterns, Erica provided the perfect summertime inspiration. Along with her dress, Erica wore Fulani braids, and they were the perfect protective style for the carpet as well as the theme of the night.

Looks We Hated

Nicki Minaj

Yikes! The rap queen’s looks were not a favorite of the viewers or the fans. While Nicki Minaj is known for dresses and suits that highlight her curves, the BET Awards was not her shining moment this year. One thing that fans and viewers were not too fond of was her hair. Not sure if it was the mullet style or the multiple colors that didn’t seem to blend correctly, her look was not a win for the night. Social media had a great time picking the style apart and asking the queen to get back to her stylish ways for the next major event.

Amber Rose

Known to sometimes push the envelope and go by her own rules, Amber Rose was not a favorite on the BET Awards Red Carpet. The Muva Rosebud disappointed on this year’s BET Red carpet, with a basic green velvet dress, it seemed to be very tacky and off theme. Fans also were not loving the long, blonde curls that Amber decided to rock for the carpet.

Ashanti

It’s no secret that Ashanti is everyone’s #WCW; unfortunately, she fell short at the awards and was not on the best-dressed list. Usually known for stylish ensembles that show off her curves, the singer arrived on the carpet with what appeared to be an oversized shirt/blazer mix. Some say she forgot to wear pants; others didn’t know how to describe the look.

Neyo

While singing is his strong point, he fell short on the fashion side at this year’s awards. The fans and viewers weren’t feeling the tan two-piece suit that the singer decided to rock on this year’s carpet. Accompanying the suit with blinged out Gucci shoes, Neyo’s look was not a fan favorite this year.

Let's Look Forward to Next Year’s Awards

Luckily for some entertainers, the awards come around each year which means there’s always room for improvement if they fell short with their wardrobe. For others, they continue to raise the bar every year and add more style to their wardrobe. It’s always fun to see who gets crowned with the best and worst looks on a red carpet, this year’s BET Awards was no different, and we don't know what our favorite celebrities will be rocking next year.

Check out my take on their hairstyles they wore as they walked the Billboard Music Awards red carpet. Rhonna killed it with her bob. Check out how to recreate her look by scrolling up to the top of the article. Terri Ellis wore a bomb ponytail to the Billboard Music Awards. She makes it look so easy, and I'm helping you create it for yourself.

How to Create the Sleek Ponytail

The sleek ponytail is quick to create but can be switched up to make it more modern and still look effortless. It’s a great style when you don’t have a lot of time to get ready, but you want to look put together. To make sure you style your ponytail correctly, I am going to break down the styling options based on your hair type. So, let's get to styling! You can add in clip-in extensions to add volume and length if desired. Fine hair or thin hair can look cute in a ponytail! I’m going to share with you tips on how to make them look sleek and fuller!

Supplies

  • Fine-toothed comb
  • Spray bottle with water
  • Elastic
  • Bristle brush
  • Spray gel
To put your fine hair in a ponytail follow these simple instructions:

Step #1

Shampoo and condition your hair

Step #2

Blow dry, or air dry your hair (make sure you use a heat protectant)

Step #3

Wet the hair around the perimeter to help smooth hair

Step #4

Use your brush to brush out the hair around the edge of the hairline

Step #5

Use an ouchless elastic to gather all the hair into a high ponytail to give the illusion of more fullness
Here are some great hacks to try to take your ponytail to the next level if you have thin/fine hair:
  • Use eyeshadow, around your hairline, that matches your roots and shade in the areas that look thin
  • Try a curling wand to add waves to your hair. Using a wand adds volume to the style.
  • Switch up the side of the part. It gives the appearance of more fullness because of the switch up.
If your hair is relaxed, your technique will be slightly different.

Supplies

  • Organix argan oil
  • PLE Edge control
  • Boar’s hairbrush
  • Wide-toothed combs
Here’s how to style a sleek and smooth ponytail:

The Steps

Step #1

Apply a quarter-sized amount of argan oil to your scalp

Step #2

Comb through the hair to remove tangles and distribute oil

Step #3

Apply some eco-style gel

Step #4

Use edge control to smooth your edges

Step #5

Brush hair with a boar’s hair

Step #6

Brush the edges smooth to spread the product evenly Your hair is good to go! Keep those stray hairs down with a few bobby pins or apply a small amount of hair gel.
Natural hair is not hard to get smooth. It takes some preparation, but I must admit, I love the look of natural hair styled into ponytails.

Cindy, of En Vogue, kept her style slicked back and classic. To create her look scroll back up to the how-to for Demi Lovato.

Ciara

Mrs. Wilson if you didn't know, showed up and showed out at the Billboard Music Awards. She is showing us how to rock motherhood, career, marriage, and philanthropy without losing yourself in the process. Check out how to get full and gorgeous curls like hers below: Sew-in techniques to get Ciara's look are below:

Supplies

  • A rat tail comb to create neat parts
  • A wide tooth comb to comb hair neatly
  • Oil for scalp
  • Black Nylon Thread
  • Small Rubber Bands
  • Hook Needle
  • Duckbill Clips
  • Weaving Net
  • Three bundles of hair (shampooed, deep-conditioned, and dried)
  • 1 Pack of Synthetic Braid Hair (optional)
You should never install a sew-in without prepping your hair first. Just think about it! Your hair is going to be under an install for an extended period. Could you imagine the smell or damage your hair and scalp will have if you don’t prepare it properly Shampoo and condition your hair with a product line that has Argan Oil. I am absolutely in love with the Organix line of hair care products because the company has a variety of products perfect for your specific hair type and needs. I also like Kim Kimble’s hair care line because it’s ideal for relaxed hair as well as naturalistas.

Partial Sew-in

A partial sew-in is perfect if you want flexibility in styling your hair in different ways. You can get a lot of wear out of your partial sew-in. Refer to the Prep Your Hair section above before beginning your install. You want to make sure you protect your natural hair to prevent damage.

The Steps

Step #1

Leave some hair out around the entire perimeter of your head

Step #2

Braid this hair, so it doesn’t get mixed in with your foundation braids

Step #3

Braid your leave out

Step #4

Braid the very back braid across the back of your nape area. This braid will make sure your back braids are secure.

Step #5

Take the ends of your braids and lay them in between the parts

Step #6

Sew each braid in the same as you would for the full sew-in Once you finish the braiding the rest of your hair in either a beehive pattern or straight back (this is your choice), prepare your weaving net. While keeping your net flat and neat, make sure you cover the entire head with the net. Begin sewing your net on the side of your deep part. Stitch the top of the net, next will be the sides, and the back is last. While you’re sewing your net to the braided foundation making sure you avoid braiding it to your perimeter and center braids because this is your leave out. At the back, stretch your weaving net first and then sew the net to your braid to reduce buckling.

The Steps

Step #1

Trim the excess net off

Step #2

Begin sewing your bundles in until you get to the top using the fold-over method

Step #3

Braid leave out to keep out of way as you style the rest of your hair

Step #4

Brush hair to remove tangles

Step #5

Section hair into four sections and clip them up

Step #6

Remove the clip of one section

Step #7

Put wand curler to 450 degrees

Step #8

Wand curl small sections backward

Step #9

Hold on wand for about 5 seconds to get a tight curl

Step #10

Repeat the above steps for the back and midsection

Step #11

Curl the crown and front tighter

Step #12

Decrease the temperature on your curling wand (your natural hair cannot stand that heat)

Step #13

Unbraid the leave out

Step #14

Curl it in small sections

Step #15

Take a wide-toothed comb and comb your curls out to give them volume

Step #16

Take your edge control and sleek your edges You are ready to kill it no matter what room you walk in!

The Best Hairstyles That We Adored from Met Gala 2018

The Best Hairstyles That We Adored from Met Gala 2018

What is the Met Gala

Every year since 1948 the upper echelon of the fashion community commune for the annual Met Gala. With A-list celebrities like Rihanna, Sarah Jessica Parker all getting dressed up for the event, the event has become a big deal. Every year there is a theme for the ball and guests must dress according to that theme. The Met Gala, formerly known as the Costume Institute gala, is a fundraising ball that benefits the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute in New York City. Vogue’s Editor in Chief, Anna Wintour, has served as the chair of the event since 1995. Miss Wintour assembles a carefully crafted invite only selection of guest to attend the event, and these attendees show out. Every year fashion lovers alike are glued to their screens awaiting the fashion looks that will grace the red carpet for the gala. The event is a time for attendees to make bold statements all in the name of fashion. The Met gives new attendees a chance to prove themselves to the fashion world. Every year the fashion looks for the ball get bolder and bolder, and the themes continue to get more creative. This year’s theme was “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.”

Our Faves Fashion & Hair

The perfect accessory to any outfit for the Met is hair. Hair is the perfect way to take any look to the next level. Let’s go over some of our shining stars at the 2018 Met Gala’s hair looks.

Rihanna

Rihanna, Rihanna, Rihanna! How could I not start with the lady who shut it down at the Met this year? When I think of this year’s event, Bad Girl Ri Ri is the first person I think of. They might as well rename the event after her. At this year’s Met Gala Rihanna slayed per usual gracing us looking like a female version of the Pope. She wore a jeweled coat, jeweled dress, and jeweled pope-like headdress. Even her shoes and purse had jewels on them. It is not uncommon for headdresses to be worn at the Met making them a hair look all of their own and this year headdresses were pretty popular. Rihanna wore her head-dress so effortlessly with style and grace. Along with her headgear, she left out two long pieces of hair on each side of her face. The pieces of hair were gelled down in a curved s-shape. The simplicity of her hair along with her extravagant headdress took her look to the next level.

SZA

Rihanna wasn’t the only one wearing headgear, other stars like SZA followed suit. SZA rocked an angelic headpiece over her signature luscious curls at the gala. I love how you could still see her signature hairstyle through her hair look. She wore her hair in a loose half-up-half-down hairstyle with soft, loose curls, loose bangs and two tiny single braids on each side of her hair. Her headpiece was a gold halo like piece with gold jeweled stars all throughout the headdress. SZA’s hairstyle was heavenly, to say the least. You can achieve a similar look by teasing out our Curly Virgin Indian hair and styling it accordingly. This hair look will surely get you noticed!

Cardi B

I was so excited to see Cardi B attend this year’s Met Gala. It was Cardi B’s first Met Gala, and she slayed on her first try! Her look was one of the most talked about and loved celebrity looks which is rare for a first-timer. The fact that Cardi B was invited to the gala so early in her career is proof that the fashion world looks at her as a rising fashion icon. She graced the carpet in a jeweled dress along with a jeweled headpiece and her beautiful Baby Bardi bump. Like SZA Cardi B rocked a headdress as well on top of big hair. Her weave texture was very similar to SZA’s so you can use our Curly Virgin Indian hair to get this look as well. I would recommend getting at least three bundles and teasing them out to the max to rock big hair like Cardi.

Solange

Solange is the ultimate creative soul sister. She put a spin on the theme and did her own Afrocentric like rendition of the heavenly bodies theme. She also rocked headgear like many but funked it up by wearing a halo-like headpiece behind a du-rag! Talk about creative! We can always count on Solange to bring an out of the box perspective when it comes to Met Gala looks. At first glance, I didn’t even realize she was wearing a du-rag. When I stared at Solange's hair look again I realized that her halo is made up of carefully crafted blonde braids! This hair look was one of the most creative and she wore it so effortlessly. I mean who else could make a du-rag look so angelic?

Kim Kardashian

While most of the celebrities we’ve gone over wore headdresses and flamboyantly accessorized hair looks, Kim K kept it simple. Kim Kardashian graced the red carpet with a half-up half-down hairdo that looked almost like a sleek long ponytail. The simplicity of the look made it even more iconic as Kim’ accomplished the theme without having to do too much.

Zendaya

Last but not least we have to mention Zendaya. Zendaya is a chameleon when it comes to hair. She seamlessly changes her hair look up all the time and rocks a variety of hair looks. At this year's Met Gala Zendaya was one of the few that kept her hair look simple. She rocked a short beautifully colored wet and wavy auburn bob with blunt bangs. Her hair look was simple yet funky which was a great compliment to her silver armored dress. She was reincarnating the legendary Joan of Arc through this look. Zendaya slayed this year’s theme!

Major Met Gala Slayage

With all of these fantastic fashion and hair looks I cannot wait until next year’s Met Gala. This year’s hair looks ranged from extravagant to simplistic allowing there to be a hair look for all. Out of all the hair looks we mentioned which were your favorite? Which Met Gala hair look would you rock? Were there other looks that we didn’t mention that caught your attention? Flaunt Your Star Power: Looks From the Oscars Red Carpet

Oscars Hair Inspiration

The 2018 Oscars is one award show which set the stage for activism and gorgeous hair inspiration. This article is not about politics nor activism, but I think it will be safe to say these two topics influenced a lot of the style choices for this year’s production. As with any great outfit, the hair has to match the overall look, and I must admit those who walked the red carpet, for the most part, got it right! You may not watch the entire show but, if you are like me, you want to know who wore what on the Oscars red carpet. It’s that time of the year that we get to see what’s trending and predictions of what will be hot for the upcoming season. The Oscars give us a glimpse into the style evolution of many of the celebrities we adore and seek to emulate their style. Whether it’s Zendaya, Mary J. Blige, or Helen Mirren Hollywood leaves no one out during the festivities. I love that there is a representation of every woman. The beauty of fashion is it can bring people together, increase awareness, and make a statement. You know what you have to do! Go ahead and press play on your favorite playlist and let's get started!

Black Panther Inspiration on The Red Carpet

A cultural phenomenon hit the movie theatres and the Oscars red carpet this year. Can we just applaud the melanin magic that is Black Panther? Can we celebrate the success of the movie and the fact it has grossed over $1,000,000,000 in less than one month of its’ release date? This movie has ignited a higher sense of pride, and the cast exhibited it on the red carpet. Let's get into some of the hairstyles worn by some of the cast members from the movie.

Danai Gurira

Danai Gurira is stunning on the Oscars red carpet! When they say “less is more” they have to be referring to her because she slayed with a shaved head! The intricate white design on her scalp added to the regal beauty she exudes on the red carpet. I have to tell you when she tosses that wig in Black Panther it reminded me of how I throw mine as soon as I hit the door to my house after a long day! It was hilarious! If you have been thinking about shaving it all off, think about a few of the pros and cons before you do it. Check out my list below and then let me know if you are going to shave your hair or not.

Pros and Cons of Shaved Head

Pros

  • You will get a lot of attention (but if you don’t like a lot of attention this may be a con for you)
  • This style is effortless because you don’t have to style it at all
  • You will be the first one ready to go because you don’t have to “style” your hair
  • It saves you money due to not having to purchase tons of products
  • It will make you feel empowered
  • You get to start over and grow your hair out (if you want)

Cons

  • People will want to rub your head
  • Some people will stare at you (but if you like the attention this may be a pro for you)
  • You may need to shave your head once a week
  • It will take a while for your hair to grow back

Angela Bassett

Angela Bassett gets it right every time! The half-up-half-down style she rocks at the Oscars After Party is ageless and she shows a woman of age how to wear it effortlessly. Lupita Nyongo

Lupita Nyong’o keeps giving us beautiful hairstyles which exhibit her natural tresses versatility when she shows up on any carpet. This year at the Oscars, she looks radiant in her metallic dress and her regal Goddess Braided style. Women who are rocking natural or relaxed hair can easily recreate this hairstyle for a special occasion. The gold thread adds the perfect touch to it. I like to think this style is a take on the Goddess Braids. Lupita’s style is a looser look, but you can recreate this look based on your preference. If you’ve been seeking a different style to wear, this is the one you should try right now!

Helen Mirren

Helen Mirren represents for all women over fifty who know how to celebrate their beauty without making it look hard. Her confidence is on a million as she walks the red carpet and, not only does she look amazing in her dress, but her hair is the perfect contrast. The simplicity of her hairstyle makes it easy for anyone to recreate it. I think the key to this hairstyle is to make sure you get a good haircut to show the hair correctly. Get a trim on a regular basis if you are growing out your pixie cut.
If you read my other articles, you will know I think @gorgeousingrey is the bomb! In a recent blog, she gives tips on how to get rid of the yellowish tint in gray hair. Take a read and let me know if it helps you with your hair. Check out this article, "Home Remedies For Yellowing Gray Hair".

Taraji P. Henson

Taraji P. Henson strolled the Oscars red carpet giving us the leg, face, and her signature bob hairstyle! I just want to scream “Yes Taraji! Serve boo!” The thing about style is once you find what works you stick with it. Taraji rocks a bob like no one else, and I love how she will switch it up by adding color or volume. You can easily rock this look by purchasing a wig from Private Label Extensions and customize it to the length and color you desire. In my opinion, the key to making sure your wig looks natural is to follow a few rules. The following list will help you look as if you are about to walk your red carpet event. Let's get this wig together!

Step #8

Extend the concealer past the edge of the wig to blend it

Step #9

Apply eco-style gel to smooth your edges You now know how to slay your wig and make it look as natural as your hair! Congratulations!

Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence never gets uptight about her style. I think she stays true to who she is while still looking amazing on the Oscars red carpet. Hollywood usually sets the standards, but she doesn't pay much attention to them and does her own thing. I love a rebel! Her hair is giving me waves for days! Honestly, I love it when she gives us a softer side of her because I always picture her as the tough chick. She reminds us that she is the perfect combination of tough and soft at the same time. I love it! If you want to get the same body waves she’s wearing on the red carpet; it’s as simple as purchasing a curling wand and adding as many waves as you want! Make sure you use a holding spray to keep your waves in place.

Best Hair From Fashion Week: New York, London, Paris, Milan!

Best Hair From Fashion Week: New York, London, Paris, Milan!

Fashion Week Is Worldwide

Twice a year fashion junkies from all over the world gather for a week of fashion festivities known as fashion week. There are various fashion weeks around the globe the main ones being in New York, London, Milan, and Paris. These four take place back to back twice a year during the fall and winter. New York, London, Milan, and Paris are known as the leading fashion cities of the world, so these shows are huge. Each city holds a fashion week back to back over the span of a month also known as fashion month to those in the fashion world who have the guts to attend all!

The Shows

Fashion week gives designers from all over the world the opportunity to showcase their designs for that season. The styles worn on these runways will foreshadow the upcoming fashion trends for that season. These are not your average shows, a lot of work goes into them. Those in the fashion industry from designers, to press, bloggers and everyone in between take these shows very seriously. Months and months of preparation goes into them. Everything from the designs, venue, guest list, makeup and even the hair is taken into detailed consideration. The hair at fashion week has been known to cause just as much of a conversation as the fashion. Just like in our day to day life, it is very important what hair look you pair with your outfit. With that being said let us take a look into some of the best hair looks from 2018’s spring summer fashion week.

New York...Sleek & Simple

The big apple always sets the tone for fashion week. Shows took place all around the big city from February 8th through 16th. Emerging and established designers showed off their spring summer collections through runway shows and fashion presentations. New York is known for attracting attendees and designers from all over the world for this special occasion. This season New York Fashion week could be described as slick back. Many designers opted for hair looks that were out of the face. The hair looks were the complete opposite of messy drama. Designers Tom Ford and Alexander Wang followed this sleek and simple hair trend.

Tom Ford

The Tom Ford show combined classy, chic and vibrant looks seamlessly. His show had everything from all black pieces to bold colored cheetah print looks. For hair looks the Tom Ford show used headbands as the hair accessory of choice for their runway show. The headbands were thick and covered a majority of the model's hair. Most of the headbands were all black and leather. There were also a few silver sequin headbands shining through the runway as well.

Alexander Wang

Alexander Wang is always doing it for the culture, youth culture especially. This season the hair at Wang’s show was a very chic classic slick back hairstyle. All the models wore their hair all the way back, simple and smooth. The sleek hair went well with the classic looks and added to the chicness of it. The collection was composed of black, white and gray tones. The looks were very classy and chic mixed with a touch of sporty and matrix. Due to the style of the looks, I have to agree that sleek and simple hair was an excellent choice for the Wang show.

London Funked It Up

London funked it up when it came to runway hair looks. The Brit’s have always been more prone to take risks when it comes to fashion. When it comes to funky color coordination to fun and extravagant shows, the fashion fun doesn’t stop, and neither does the hair. Designers like Katie Eary, Burberry, Ashley Williams, Shrimps, Ash Ish and more funked it up with daring hair looks. Let us take a look at a few types of styles that were trending during London fashion week.

Slick Back

A slick back hairstyle is a classic and timeless look that never gets old. This hair look was trending at fashion weeks all over the world. The Alexander Wang show wasn't the only runway with this look. Designers such as Alexander McQueen and Prabal Gurung opted for the slick back look as well. This hairstyle serves as the go-to hair look for fashion shows and fashion lovers all around the world. The look allows the focus at the shows to be on the clothes and not the hair. Let's see how these designers incorporated the slick back hair look into their shows.

Alexander McQueen

McQueen gave us the classic hair look paired with classic tailored fashion looks. The classic hair and fashion looks created a timeless look.

Prabal Gurung

Prabal Gurung added a little spin on this hair look by adding a halo-like braid in the back. The model's hair looked slick back from the front but if you looked closely you would see a nicely done braid going across their head. Models like Gigi Hadid graced the runway with this look.

Get The Look

To get this look, you can use any of our straight extensions and just add water. If you’re not looking to do a sew-in a very easy way to get this look is with one of our lace frontal wigs. I can vouch for this style option because this has been my go-to hair look lately. I wear my 20-inch lace frontal body wave wig from Private Label all the time and add some water to give it a wet and beachy look. You can rock this look with your hair down or all going back in a ponytail. If you purchase our 360 lace frontal wig, you can even rock the wet look in a bun.

Milan

Now we are on to Milan, Italy where they take fashion very seriously. The Italians are not only known for their love of high-quality fashion but for the production of it too. The best of the best when it comes to designers show in Milan and Paris. Brands that are household names such as Gucci set it off in Milan and Paris. Speaking of Gucci, let us first look at the hair looks from the Gucci show.

Gucci

The Gucci show was over the top, to say the least. This show broke all the rules when it comes to hair looks. For hair looks Gucci decided to do headwear. Statement headwear pieces such as head jewelry, hijabs, and even hats were worn throughout the show. The show was completely non-traditional and unconventional when it comes to runway hair and fashion making it an unforgettable show. Models were seen with scarfs and even face masks over their heads. Males and females were both wearing all types of hats from beanies to sports caps and even turbans. The headwear of various cultures was represented. Gucci didn't stop there! Models walked down the runway with human like heads in their hand that resembled their very own faces. The Gucci show in Milan was daring to say the least.

Paris

Last, but not least, the beautiful city of Paris. Paris, France is the last stop for fashion week. All major high fashion designers show here. Lets take a look at the Thom Brown show that gave us a nice end to fashion week.

Thom Brown

The Thom Brown show gave us a nice golden color play. The fashion looks from the show looked almost like a modernized version of fashion from the Victorian era. The show was set up like an art studio, and the models looked exactly like that...art. Each model rocked gold tresses, models of all skin tones had golden hair that looked magical on their various skin tones. The hair was styled in a wrap style, yes a wrap style; you know the signature wrap style that us ladies of color wear to keep our hair straight and full of body for the day ahead. This look was no shocker because we’ve seen Rihanna rock the wrapped hair look too turning a nighttime hair look into a daytime trend. The wrap style came along with a twist as some models graced the runway with what looked like finger wave and wrap style combos.

Find Your Hair Inspo At Fashion Week

Next time you hair about fashion week don’t just think about the fashion, think about the hair! You can look to fashion week for hair inspiration as well. Hair and fashion go hand in hand in taking your look to the next level, and those in the fashion industry know this which is why so much careful thought and consideration is taken into the hair looks at the shows.
