Micro-What?

Eyebrows on fleek! Eyebrows are essential for a beat face, a natural look, or a flawless bare face. Everyone gets eyebrows arched, waxed, plucked or threaded, and now, Microblading and Micro-shading.

What Is MicroBlading?

Microblading has been the new beauty wave of eyebrow care sweeping that has swept the beauty industry. Eyebrows have gone from thin to thick over the decades; but one thing remains, the need to have neat and manicured brows.

Every two weeks to a month, women everywhere have bombarded salons to get their brows waxed or threaded. We've all been in front of the mirror spending thirty minutes every morning filling in our eyebrows. Not to mention the hours spent on Youtube initially trying to learn the best way to get the most natural brows!

Microblading involves using a hand tool with nine or more tiny needles to create shallower cuts on the skin and then letting pigment seep in. Thin, hair-like strokes are formed on the surface to thicken eyebrows.

Microblading is a semi-permanent coloring of the eyebrows to achieve a thicker and fuller look.

Where Is It Done?

Microblading offered at spas and beauty bars should only perform by a certified esthetician or microblading technician due to the nature of the procedure that involved breaking the skin and an extended change in the appearance of brows.

How Much is Microblading?

Now, here is where I begin to waver when it comes to advocating for microblading.

This technique of filling your brows can range from $300-$1200. However, it only takes one session for your eyebrows to be made new with contouring and filling; though fill-ins or touch-ups are scheduled six weeks after and are often free.

Do's and Don'ts Before Booking an Appointment

First, before booking an appointment do your research on the history and potential risks associated with microblading.

It also may be helpful to get a skin consultation if you have sensitive skin to ensure that you will not get an infection or rash as a result of the tattooing. Additionally, visit the establishment beforehand and get reviews on your potential technician; better safe than sorry!

And lastly, consider your reasoning for microblading, have you exerted all your options before trying something more expensive and permanent? Now, you're all set to book your appointment, here's a tip to get prepared!

Do: Come with your skin free of makeup that includes a pencil filling in, brow dip or liner. Wash your face thoroughly with a gentle wash and drink plenty of water.

What To Avoid

To get your skin prepared and maintain strong brows, don't tweeze, wax or pick at your eyebrows, tan, get a facial peel, or workout.

Also avoid taking Fish Oil, Vitamin E, Vitamin A, and Retinol products two weeks to a month before the procedure, which is natural blood thinners. Avoid getting botox injections and lastly, do not tint, bleach, or color your brows before your appointment.

Following these tips will ensure that your skin and brows will adequately absorb the pigment and will be less likely to fade or cause irritation to the surrounding skin.

To reduce your chances of excessive bleeding or poor coloration avoid consuming caffeine, drinking alcohol, and taking over the counter prescriptions like Aspirin.

It seems like a lot to get your eyebrows colored but remember, this method breaks the skin to deposit ink under the skin and lasts for a few months to a year or more with proper care.

It is a semi-invasive and permanent alteration to your face, and should not be entered into lightly.

What Happens at a Microblading Appointment?

Microblading appointments are usually two hours long. During the start of the session, the brows cleaned and the provider collects measurements.

The artist will outline the desired shape of the brows with a pencil until it is filled and gives the appearance specified by the client. Then, a numbing cream is applied to the eyebrow and forehead region of the face to ensure a painless procedure. Women have said that it feels like light tweezing or pressure.

The actual micro-blading takes up fifteen to forty minutes at the end of the appointment depending on the style of the eyebrows and absorption of the skin.

Microblading vs. Microshading

What is Microshading?

Microshading is the coloring of eyebrows, it is achieved with the same ink as microblading and is semi-permanent.

This procedure is a less abrasive version of microblading and recommended after one is dissatisfied with microblading, or in addition to their initial microblading procedure. Microshading is done with a machine instead of by hand like microblading. It gives more extensive coverage and broader strokes to the eyebrow line.

Microshading lasts for up to a year and is non-invasive. For sensitive and oily skin types microshading is the better option. Microshading creates a more "finished" or block look than microblading. Eyebrows obtained by microshading have the same aftercare as microblading patients.
