I Made My First Sale! Now What? Ways to Succeed in Hair Business

Be proud of that first sale. So many of us get our first sale and go crazy because they can’t believe someone bought an item from them!

Well, I know I have before. But after the excitement dies down, it will be time to get focused again. Especially running a hair business; those folks will need their hair so you can’t get off track.

But when you’re running a hair business, sometimes your first blueprint works for years and sometimes it works for a few weeks. If that ever happens to you, it’s okay. Understand that change is inevitable and you have to be okay with it.

It’s also good to have multiple plans in places, so if one plan falls through, you have six more lined up to keep the hair business rolling as if nothing happened! Continue reading below on different ways to get more hair sales for your hair business.

If It’s Not Broke, Don’t Fix It!

No really, don’t fix something that isn’t broke! If you received your first sale, you need to analyze what you did and continue doing it.

You don’t want to get too excited and start trying different things. Whatever you did the first time was obviously a great move. Think about ways to do it more often or different times of the day.

Get a notepad and write down exactly what you did and why you think it worked for you. Learn to master it until it becomes second nature. Most times, the things that are most random is what will usually work, until of course, it’s time to come up with a new plan.

Until that happens, stay right where you are and knock those sales out.

As I mentioned earlier, sometimes your plans don’t stay effective, and there’s nothing wrong with that. You just have to regroup and come up with a new one.

A popular way to generate more sales is through advertisements. There are many ways to do this, but I’ll discuss two main ones that work well which is social media ads and Google ads.

If you didn’t know, social media is like the new Internet, on the Internet! You can browse, shop and of course run ads. Instagram and Facebook are great for ads too. What you would need to do is sign up for a free account on either platform or both. Then you need to opt-in to have a business account.

Since you’re selling hair, that is the product that you will be advertising. Both platforms will have several options for you to choose from as far as how long you want your ad to run for, what photo you choose for the ad and even what demographics get to see your ads.

Google ads pretty much work the same way. One of the biggest differences is that Google ads run off of keywords. So if you’re running ads and someone types in “hair extensions” on google, it’s a good chance they could see your ad depending on the ad arrangement you set up.

Because you’re selling hair, which is a booming business right now, you want to make sure you’re working around the clock to have your product pushed. Of course, you can’t work around the clock, so that’s why advertisements are amazing.

Advertisements will have you waking up in the morning at 7 am with ten sells that you didn’t even expect to have. After you set it up, it works for you!

Have Photoshoots

What better way to promote your hair business than doing a photo shoot! Having professional photos taken of your product is always a great way to make sure you stand out and bring in more sales. When you’re advertising through, ads, having professional images are a great look.

Since you’re the owner of the hair business, make sure you also take photos with you wearing different types of hair that you sell. The reason is that people love to see the owner in front of the product. It shows that you aren’t in the back somewhere having someone else run everything.

It also shows that you’re invested in the product too. People are more inclined to purchase from you if they see certain things like that.

Whenever you have a hair business, it’s almost necessary for you to have a Youtube channel as well! When it comes to advertising, Youtube is an amazing platform to have. There you could engage with your customers, answer questions and also show them the actual product.

Although many people don’t like to buy in the dark, they still do, but when they can see the product they want they are more inclined to purchase from you. Also, setting up a Youtube account is super fast and free!

Collab Deals

Don’t think just because you have your own business that you can’t work with other people. Collaborating with another person or company is a great thing if both parties are on the same page.

Since you’re selling extensions, why not visit hair salons to sell them hair or even see if they will sell it for you and they keep a percentage of the profit. Honestly, I’m sure some hair salons would like to run a hair business within their shop, but they probably don’t have a lot of time.

It’s a genius idea though. Depending on the hairstyle the customer is getting, they will need extensions anyway so mind as well save the customer time and money. The worker and yourself both win.

Set Up A Store Front

Oh no, you don’t just have to sell hair from your Instagram or the trunk of your car. Setting up a storefront can be an option as well. It may take a couple of dollars to start it, or you could have someone invest in it, but it’s a great pathway. Also, having a storefront could one day be your end goal.

But when you’re setting up a storefront, one easy way to pull in more sales is set up shop near a busy hair salon! Why not? You already know that customers will need hair, or they forgot to get hair and now may have to change their style, but your store would be right there to save the day.

Having a storefront also allows you to interact with your customers. If you get most of your sales from your online store, you don’t know who is purchasing your product technically. The storefront will allow your customers to have the chance to ask questions, see and touch the hair. Sometimes people don’t like purchasing online, so this would be a great option to have.

48-Hour Flash Sales

Flash sales are a customer and business’ best friend!

A flash sale is a quick sale that is only for a short amount of time at a reduced rate. Having this type of sale, say, every several months is a sure way to bring in new customers and have old customers returning.

Let’s say you’re selling Brazilian Deep Wave Hair for $50 a bundle at regular price. You could run a flash sale for two days and drop the price to $25 a bundle. It’s inevitable that you will have tons of traffic. Not only will your sale items get sold, but people will also want to purchase other products since they are already on your site.

Flash sales is also a good way to keep customers returning because they know you will drop your prices. Folks love when prices drop! It’s also a sign that you care about your clientele. So many companies have high prices and never have sales.

Although that’s not necessarily a bad thing, it’s for sure a great thing when companies drop prices. I believe it also shows that you value your customers and can be a way to say thank you. So, go ahead and tell your customers you thank them, with a flash sale every once and a while!

Email Marketing

Email marketing is one of the best old-school selling tactics that is still effective today.

Each time you get a sale whether it’s online or in person, you want to make sure you are capturing the customer’s email address. If you’re doing it online, you could have a spot on the payment screen that asks for email.

Email marketing will allow you to follow up with customers on their purchase and also promote new products and sales that you will have for the future.

When you’re able to reach out to customers and ask how their purchase was or how the product is working for them, you will be surprised how far that gets you. Plus, customer service should always be the top priority. When you show that you truly care about a customer, I promise you they will always remember you and come back for more items!

Also, it’s best the customer knows the benefits of you needing their email address. One catchy thing you can say is “hey if you provide your email address you will be the first to know about all sales and new items one day before everyone else.”

What’s important here is that you are showing that you’re making the customer top priority. So catch those email address so you can catch those sales!

Pop- Up Shops

Pops up shops are currently trending in today’s world. They are sort of like an unexpected or unplanned event that normally takes places in a busy area. Although, you can arrange your pop-shop however you choose.

If you have a social media account, you could send out flyers the morning of the event and let people know where you will be. You never really know how a pop shop will go, but they are still fun to do. You could also have a flash sale during the event as well.

Attending regular events is important as well when trying to generate sales. How will you ever become the number #1 hair dealer if the world doesn’t know you? You have to put yourself out there.

Each year, many different companies hold all kinds of hair events all over the states. The purpose of these events is for anyone a part of the beauty industry to have a chance to showcase their business. It’s a great way to network and get new clients. You will also have a chance to set yourself apart from other hair companies. Have lots of business cards ready and draw those customers in!

Because who doesn’t love free stuff? Or Free hair? Exactly.

Although you’re giving away free hair to maybe one or two people, the purpose is to draw attention to your business. The more attention you get, the more potential customers you will have. And you can do several things to promote a giveaway.

Giveaway Ideas & Rules to Follow to Win:

  • Share social media pages
  • Tag at least three people on favorite photos
  • Write a short story on why you should win
  • Post your favorite hairstyle and tag (you, the owner)

See, you can have many different rules or even one rule if you chose. Also, you want your giveaway to run for about seven days on average. The timeframe is for two reasons; you want to engage people in something fun, so they get excited.

People love to feel a part of something. And also the longer it runs, the more people are viewing your site. You may even get people who don’t participate in the giveaway, but they end up purchasing hair from you.

Everyone loves a giveaway! Well, not the people who didn’t get chosen for the free hair, but you get it!

Now you should be on your way to getting more coins.

Remember, when running a hair business, you will always have customers! It’s a large industry, and people are always looking for different ways to purchase hair, which company has the best deal and how it gets presented; so you must stay ready.

If your most effective strategy doesn’t work anymore, don’t panic, just quickly regroup and go another route.

Also, get yourself a notebook. Write down all your plans and make them as detailed as possible. That way you will always have something to go back to if you feel yourself falling off track. And if you fall off track, just pick yourself back up and continue!

    I agree because when I got my first sell I got so excited that I lost all of my focus. I stopped advertising and promoting and I stopped being serious because I’m like yea there gonna come now . I had to realize it doesn’t stop in order to get customers I have to put in the work and time and whatever is needed to succeed, I can’t let an order let me lose focus. All to say once I got my focus back I literally got at least 5 orders after that & It just motivates me so much more because I’m like I can really take this somewhere. I love doing the promotions and raffles I always do them every here and there sometimes I don’t even use my hair or anything sometimes I do raffles for sharing the most post or who invited the most people to like my page. I try to get my customers to at least like my page before I try to force them into buying. I don’t want them to feel rushed . and I want to do a photoshoot so bad and I just can’t think so I’m not going to rush it but I think they are such a good thing to do. I have all my customers to videos and pictures but I feel like I want better like for flyers cards and etc. Some of the tips you mentioned will really help me along the way this article was a great one

Before I purchased my vendor I posted my sales prices and even ads consistently till the point my sister said she would block me lol. It’s my hustle and I love what I do. HAIR! I’m planning my photoshoot at the end of April and luckily all of the girls have purchased the hair at a discounted price. That wasn’t the case at all, I didn’t receive my second customer until 2 months later. Talk about being impatient. I know now that in order to get customers I have to put in the work and time at all times. My hard work will eventually pay off.
