Who is Tokyo Stylez?

He is from Omaha, Nebraska and currently lives in Washington, DC. He styled his sister’s hair at a young age and maintained his love for hair.

At the age of 17, he knew hairstyling was his purpose. After he relocated to Washington, DC he, temporarily, gave up on hair but thank goodness he decided to stay. He began creating wigs for cancer patients, and soon his clients began requesting the wigs for themselves.

Fast forward to 2018, and he is building great looks for Naomi Campbell, Beyonce, Kylie Jenner, and Toni Braxton just to name a few. His talents support shows such as the BET Awards, The Real Housewives of Atlanta and The Real.

Let’s get into some of my favorite looks by the “fairy godfather of hair” himself!

K. Michelle

I love me some Kimberly (K. Michelle). I guess it’s her rebellious soul and her ability to overcome adversity to achieve her dreams. She never disappoints with her music nor her style choices.

Although I do have short hair, I still like to wear protective styles. I immediately fell in love with the gorgeous red hairstyle Tokyo Stylez created for K Michelle! The color is radiant and I what I like most about it is that it doesn’t look fake or cheap (we know Tokyo always creates envy-worthy hairstyles and he isn’t cheap).

Prep Hair for Your Install

Always prep your hair before installing a sew-in. Think about it!

Your hair is going to be under an install for an extended period. Could you imagine the smell or damage your hair and scalp will have if you don’t prepare it adequately?

Step 1.

Shampoo and condition your hair

Step 2.

Dry your hair

Step 3.

Apply leave-in conditioner

Prep your hair for your sew-in

To ensure your sew-in lasts longer your braids are the key!

Make sure your braids aren’t too tight that you have to take pain pills afterward. That’s a no-no! Also, your foundation braids should be small and flat to give you a smooth foundation, so your sew-in looks as realistic as possible.

A good foundation will make sure your sew-in is flawless!

Step 1.

Start with clean hair

Step 2.

Create two perimeter braids (each one going around the temple of your head)

Step 3.

Braid them both toward the back of your head

Step 4.

Create one braid (make sure to leave some hair out) that is going to go across the back nape area of the head. This braid will be your anchor braid for your back wefts.

Step 5.

Separate hair into three sections and slide down about a quarter of an inch to half an inch before you start your braid to reduce the tension on your scalp.

Step 6.

Braid the rest of your hair and keep your braids small and neat. Small braids provide you with a flat and smooth look when your sew-in is finished and helps it to last longer. These braids should be braided straight to the back. You can add synthetic hair into each braid. It helps your braids last longer.

Step 7.

Take the braids and start to sew them down by placing your remaining loose braids in between other cornrows. Doing this ensures you get a flat base. Make sure you knot your thread a couple of times to make sure it’s secure.

Step 8.

Take your threaded needle underneath all three braids.

Step 9.

Loop your thread twice and pull straight through.

Step 10.

Create a knot and continue the stitching process until you secure the entire braid.

Step 11.

Continue the process above for each braid.

Once you finish braiding, apply oil to your scalp. Remember! A little goes a long way!

Take the braids and start to sew them down.

Step 1.

Place your remaining loose braids in between other cornrows to get a flat base

Step 2.

Make sure you knot your thread a couple of times to make sure it’s secure.

Step 3.

If you’re installing a closure, align closure with a part in the head.

Step 4.

Leave about a ¼ of the closure in front of the hairline.

Step 5.

Put your first stitch through the closure and then stitch into the braid and through the closure and pull the thread through.

Step 6.

Loop it through the thread and bring to the edge of the closure to secure a knot.

You’ll need help on the other side. Have someone hold the closure down as you secure the opposite side. Repeat the same process as before.

Don’t pull too tight because you want to protect your edges. Stitch the closure along the perimeter and the braid. Don’t leave large gaps between stitches because you don’t want any bunching. Stitch closure down going toward the back of the head. Always stitch the sides first and then the back.

karrueche tran tokyo stylez blonde bob 1

Begin sewing your bundles by doubling the wefts.

Step 1.

Start at the back of the head

Step 2.

Stick the needle through the wefts through the bottom braid and then through the weft again

Step 3.

Complete 5-7 stitches and then knot them

Step 4.

You don’t have to go through the weft with every stitch so go through every 3-5 stitches

Step 5.

Go through the wefts when you get to the edge of the head and knot the thread

Step 6.

Part the closure

Step 7.

In the part anchor the front of the closure to the braid

When You Love What You Do

I think the key lesson of this article is to keep doing what you love!

Even Tokyo Stylez fell out of love with hair for a brief moment because he did not see how he was going to achieve his dream when he first moved to D.C. Your current situation may not look glamorous but if you keep pushing you will get there!

Stop confusing your purpose with what you see on Instagram or Snapchat. Start focusing on what you love doing and keep refining your craft. I also want to encourage you to surround yourself with people who support you and never allow labels to define you. You may have K. Michelle or Naomi Campbell as a client if you keep working hard!

Don’t forget to comment below with your favorite style and if you have met Tokyo Stylez let us know!
