What is Single Donor Hair?

Importance of Single Donor Hair

Our phone rings all day with questions about starting a hair extension business.

One popular question is... "Is your hair from a single donor?"

What does it mean and does it really matter? That is the question.

What is Single Donor Hair?

As we all know, 100% human hair is cut off of a woman from various parts of the world including India, Malaysia, China, Vietnam, Brazil, Russia, and a dozen other places.

It is important that the hair is bunched at the time of cutting to keep the cuticles inline (Remy Hair) which will reduce the chances of tangling and matting. Basically every hair weave lovers nightmare.

Often times, the hair is bunched from a large group of donors and then sent to a factory to be shackled (remove short hairs) and wefted.

Some manufacturers will specifically weft hair from a single individual that would constitute the name single donor hair. This means all the hair in the individual bundle is gathered and wefted from the same person.

Do I Need Single Donor Hair?

Yes and No.

Single donor hair is typically only important when dealing with a few specific types of hair. For 99% of buyers, single donor hair is really not that important.

To be honest, it is more a marketing ploy to raise the price of the bundles.

When Single Donor Hair is IMPORTANT

Single donor hair is important when dealing with very specific NATURAL hair that has detailed curl patterns or color. This can often be the case when dealing with Raw Indian Hair or Raw Russian Hair that is in the natural hair color state that is generally lighter than a 1B.

Raw Indian hair extensions can have a dramatic difference in curl pattern and color. This is an instance when having a single donor is important because the curl pattern is not consistent between the two women that just donated their hair to their Hindu temple for religious reasons.

In this case, it would be more important to have single donor hair bundles.

Look at the photo below. Could you imagine not having bundles from a single donor when working with this type of hair? This specific hair is from Uzbekistan where the natural color can vary dramatically from woman to woman.

When Single Donor Hair is NOT Important

Most of the time really.

The more commonly sold hair extensions have a curl pattern that is achieved by steam and bamboo.

Ever wonder why thousands of bundles look exactly the same? It is not because thousands of hair donors had the same curl pattern.

Most hair commonly sold on the market does not need to be a single donor bundle for this reason. If you are buying a 1B Body Wave then it really won't matter if it is from a single donor or not. Well other than someone telling you it is from a single donor and you paying more.

We don't have time for that!

Should You Sell Single Donor Hair Extensions

We always have to look at the business side of things here at Private Label Extensions. A client might occasionally ask you for single donor hair but it probably will not be too often.

The next question is will your average client be willing to foot the bill for the extra cost? Probably not. This is just from our experience in the hair industry.

There will be special occasions when dealing with more rare and specific hair where it is crucial to have all the same color or wave pattern from an individual. But when selling hair extensions you have to really focus on what is most important.
