Accessibility Statement for Private Label
Private Label Extensions is committed to making PrivateLabelExtensions.com usable by as many people as possible, including people with disabilities. Accessibility is not a one-time project for us. We treat it as ongoing work, and we fix problems as we find them.
Conformance status
The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) define requirements for making web content more accessible to people with disabilities. WCAG sets three levels of conformance: Level A, Level AA, and Level AAA.
We are working toward WCAG 2.1 Level AA. We do not claim full conformance. Our site is partially conformant, which means some parts of the content do not yet fully meet the standard. We describe the areas we know still fall short in the Known limitations section below.
Measures we have taken
The improvements below have been made and verified on our site. This is a record of specific work, not a general statement of intent.
Colour and contrast
- Text over the hero images on our collection pages was hard to read against the background. We rebuilt it so the text now measures a contrast ratio of 6.21:1 on desktop and 5.12:1 at its lowest on mobile. Both exceed the 4.5:1 ratio WCAG requires for normal text. The previous design fell below that threshold at most desktop screen sizes.
- Form field text on our hairstylist program page was a pale mauve that was difficult to read. It is now near-black.
Navigation and keyboard use
- Buttons, links, menu items, filter chips and FAQ toggles in our newer page sections are at least 44 by 44 pixels, so they can be tapped reliably by people with limited dexterity or who use a device one-handed. Main call-to-action buttons are 52 pixels tall.
- These sections can be operated with a keyboard alone, and the item you are currently on is given a clearly visible outline so you can see where you are.
- Navigation uses real links rather than scripted click areas, so it works with browser and assistive-technology shortcuts, and links can be opened in a new tab or bookmarked as expected.
- Links whose purpose is not obvious from their wording alone have been given a descriptive label for screen reader users.
- When you follow a link to a section within a page, the page now scrolls so that the section heading is not hidden behind the sticky header at the top of the screen.
Forms
- Form fields use a 16 pixel text size, which stops iPhones and iPads from automatically zooming in when you tap into a field and leaving the rest of the page off-screen.
- Fields are full width and at least 46 pixels tall, making them easier to see and to tap accurately.
Page structure and images
- Headings have been corrected so that each page has exactly one main heading and a sensible order beneath it. Several pages previously had no main heading, or more than one, which makes a page difficult to navigate with a screen reader.
- Descriptive alternative text has been added to the images used in our newer navigation tiles and category chips, so their content is announced to screen reader users.
- Images now reserve their space before they load, so content does not jump around underneath your cursor or finger while a page is still loading.
- In May 2023 we completed a pass adding alternative text to thousands of product images across the store.
Motion
- Our newer page sections respect the reduced motion setting in your operating system. If you have asked your device to minimise animation, we do not animate these sections.
Layout across devices
- Pages have been checked at screen widths of 320, 390, 430, 750, 1024 and 1440 pixels with no horizontal scrolling, so content stays readable when zoomed in or viewed on a small screen.
Known limitations
We would rather tell you what is still wrong than imply everything is fixed. We are aware of the following:
- Menu text contrast. The default menu text colour supplied by our theme measures a contrast ratio of 3.78:1 against its background. That does not meet the 4.5:1 Level AA requirement for normal text. This is a pre-existing issue that we have not yet remediated.
- Content from third-party services. Some parts of our site are produced by outside services rather than by us, including our customer reviews widget and certain application forms. We do not directly control their markup or styling, so we cannot guarantee they meet the same standard. Where we find problems we raise them with the provider, and we will help you get the same information or complete the same task another way.
- Older pages. The improvements listed above have been applied to our newer and most-visited page sections first. Older pages have not all been brought up to the same standard yet.
How we assess accessibility
Private Label Extensions assessed the accessibility of this site by self-evaluation, carried out internally. We have not commissioned a formal third-party accessibility audit or certification, and we make no claim to hold one.
