Method guide
Types ofhair extensions.
Hair extensions come in seven main types: sew-in bundles, wigs, clip-ins, tape-ins, ponytails, lace closures and lace frontals. They differ by how they attach, whether a stylist is needed, how long they last and what they cost. This guide compares all seven so you can pick one.

The methods
Extensions you wear on your own hair
These four attach to or sit over your natural hair. Two you can do yourself, two need a stylist.
- Most popularSew-in
Hair bundles
$33 – $296 per bundle
Wefts of human hair sewn onto braided-down natural hair. The most versatile method and the one most stylists build a full install around.
- Stylist install
- 2–4 bundles per head
- Lasts 6–8 weeks per install
- Reusable
- No install
Wigs
$39 – $1,437
A full unit on a cap you put on and take off. No braiding, no sewing and no salon appointment needed to wear it.
- Wear it yourself
- One purchase, not several
- Take it off nightly
- Protects your natural hair
- DIY
Clip-ins
$96 – $279
Wefts on small pressure clips that snap into your own hair in minutes. The only method that is genuinely reversible in a single sitting.
- In and out in minutes
- No stylist, no adhesive
- Wear occasionally
- Least commitment
- Semi-permanent
Tape-ins
$69 – $377
Thin wefts taped either side of a section of your own hair. They lie flat, which makes them the most discreet option for finer hair.
- Stylist install
- Very flat and discreet
- Moved up every 6–8 weeks
- Reusable
The finishing pieces
Pieces that complete an install
Closures and frontals cover the top of a sew-in so it reads as a natural hairline. A ponytail is a standalone piece for a single style.
- Top piece
Lace closures
$43 – $240
A small lace panel, usually 4x4 to 7x7, that closes the top of a sew-in and gives you one natural part. Cheaper than a frontal and quicker to install.
- Covers the crown
- One parting space
- Sizes from 2x6 to 7x7
- Pairs with 2–3 bundles
- Top piece
Lace frontals
$70 – $240
A wider lace panel running ear to ear, normally 13x4 or 13x6. It costs more than a closure but lets you part anywhere and pull the hair back.
- Ear-to-ear coverage
- Part anywhere
- 13x4 and 13x6 sizes
- Pairs with 2–3 bundles
- Single style
Ponytail extensions
$55 – $567
One piece that clips or wraps around your own gathered hair. The fastest way to add length for a single occasion with no install at all.
- On in under a minute
- No stylist needed
- One style, done well
- Reusable
Closures and frontals are bought alongside bundles, not instead of them. A typical sew-in is 2–3 bundles plus one closure or frontal.
Compare
Wig or sew-in?
This is the decision most people are actually making. Both use the same 100% human hair — the difference is what the install demands of you.
| What to compare | Human hair wig | Sew-in with bundles |
|---|---|---|
| Price for the hair | $39 – $1,437 for one unit | $33 – $296 per bundle, 2–4 needed |
| Pieces to buy | One | Bundles plus a closure or frontal |
| Stylist needed | No | Yes |
| Time to put on | Minutes | Several hours in a salon chair |
| Can you take it off daily | Yes | No, it stays in for weeks |
| Parting freedom | Depends on the lace | Depends on closure or frontal |
| Your own hair | Tucked under a cap | Braided down underneath |
| Best for | Flexibility, travel, trying a look | A settled everyday look |
Plenty of people own both: a sew-in for everyday wear and a wig for the weeks between installs.
How to choose
Four questions that narrow it down
Answer these before you look at any product page and the choice usually makes itself.
- Access
Do you have a stylist?
Sew-ins and tape-ins need one. Wigs, clip-ins and ponytails do not. If you do not have a stylist yet, you can find a stylist who works with our hair.
- Frequency
Every day or occasionally?
- Budget
What is your total number?
Remember to count every piece plus installation. Our hair extensions cost guide breaks down real prices for each method.
- Length
How long do you want to go?
Length drives price more than anything else. Compare 16 inch, 22 inch and 28 inch hair to see the jump.
- Quality
Virgin, raw, or neither?
These terms describe how the hair was processed, not the method. Our remy, virgin and raw hair guide explains what you are actually paying for.
- Texture
Which texture matches you?
Questions
Extension types, answered
What are the different types of hair extensions?
There are seven main types: sew-in hair bundles, wigs, clip-ins, tape-ins, ponytail extensions, lace closures and lace frontals. Bundles, tape-ins, closures and frontals are installed by a stylist. Wigs, clip-ins and ponytails you can put on yourself. All of ours are 100% human hair.
Which type of hair extension is best for beginners?
Clip-in extensions are the easiest starting point because they go in and come out in minutes with no stylist, no adhesive and no commitment. A human hair wig is the next easiest and gives a fuller change of look.
Which extensions are least damaging to natural hair?
Wigs and clip-ins put the least strain on your own hair because nothing is bonded, taped or sewn to it. A wig also fully covers and protects your natural hair while you wear it. Any method is safe when installed and removed properly by a stylist.
What is the difference between a closure and a frontal?
A lace closure is a smaller panel, typically 4x4 through 7x7, that covers the crown and gives one parting space. A lace frontal is wider, usually 13x4 or 13x6, runs ear to ear and lets you part anywhere or pull the hair back. Frontals cost more and take longer to install.
Which type of extension lasts the longest?
Sew-in bundles and tape-ins last longest per install, typically six to eight weeks before they need moving up. The hair itself can be reused for months across several installs when it is 100% human hair and cared for properly.
How many bundles do I need?
Two to four for a full head. Two or three covers most lengths up to 18 inches; go to three or four for longer lengths and curlier textures, which spread thinner. Add one closure or frontal on top. Our cost guide shows what that totals.
