Hair quality guide

Remy, virgin and raw hair, what the labels mean.

Remy hair has all its cuticles aligned in one direction. Virgin hair is remy hair that has never been chemically processed. Raw hair is virgin hair from a single donor, unprocessed and unblended. Each step up means less processing, longer life and a higher price.

The three terms

What each label guarantees

These words are used loosely across the industry. Here is what each one means when it is used correctly, and what it does not promise.

  • Remy

    Cuticles aligned in one direction

Remy means the hair was collected so every strand runs root-to-tip the same way. That is why it does not tangle or mat. Remy says nothing about colouring or perming — remy hair can still have been processed.

  • Non-remy

    Cuticles running both ways

Collected hair with strands facing in both directions. It tangles, so manufacturers strip the cuticle with acid and coat it in silicone. It looks fine for a few washes, then mats. We do not sell it.

  • Virgin

    Remy hair, never chemically treated

Never dyed, permed, bleached or chemically straightened. It takes colour predictably and holds a curl. It may be blended from more than one donor, so texture can vary slightly between bundles. Shop virgin hair bundles.

  • Raw

Virgin hair from a single donor

Unprocessed, unblended and cut from one head, so the texture is consistent through the whole bundle. It is the longest lasting and the most expensive. Shop raw hair bundles.

  • Price

    Less processing costs more

Our virgin bundles run $33 to $143 and raw bundles start at $49. The gap reflects sourcing: single-donor hair in a matched length is far harder to find. See the full breakdown in our cost guide.

  • Watch out

    Country names are not grades

“Brazilian”, “Peruvian” and “Malaysian” describe a texture style, not a verified origin, and letter grades like 10A are marketing invented by sellers. Judge hair by remy, virgin or raw — and by who you are buying from.

Compare

Virgin hair or raw hair?

Both are unprocessed human hair and both are remy. The difference is whether the bundle came from one donor or several.

How to check what you are actually buying

Labels are easy to print. These four checks tell you more than any grade on a bundle wrap.

  1. Check who is selling it

A real supplier has a verifiable address, a returns policy and a trading history. We have shipped from Atlanta since 2014 and hold a 4.8 star rating from 3,063 Google reviews.

  2. Ignore the letter grades

10A, 12A and similar grades are not an industry standard — any seller can claim any letter. Look for remy, virgin or raw instead, and ask what each one means to that seller.

  3. Read the return policy

If a seller will not take hair back, they are not confident in it. Every order from us carries a 30-day return policy.

  4. Feel it if you can

Unprocessed hair feels like hair, not like silicone. Run it through your fingers in both directions — remy hair is smooth downward and slightly resistant upward. Our Atlanta and Tucker stores carry the same hair we ship.

You can also come to our Atlanta or Tucker store and inspect the hair in person before you buy.

Questions

Hair quality, answered

What is remy hair?

Remy hair is human hair collected so that every strand's cuticle runs in the same root-to-tip direction. That alignment is what stops it tangling and matting. Remy describes how the hair was collected, not whether it has been coloured or permed — remy hair can still be processed.

What is virgin hair?

Virgin hair is remy human hair that has never been chemically processed — never dyed, bleached, permed or chemically straightened. Because the cuticle is untouched, it takes colour predictably and holds a curl. Our virgin hair bundles run $33 to $143 per bundle.

What is raw hair?

Raw hair is virgin hair sourced from a single donor and left completely unprocessed, including the texture. Because it all came from one head, the pattern and colour stay consistent through the whole bundle. Our raw hair bundles start at $49.

What is the difference between virgin and raw hair?

Both are unprocessed and both are remy. Virgin hair may be blended from several donors and its texture is usually steam processed into a pattern. Raw hair comes from one donor in that donor's own natural pattern, so texture is more consistent and it lasts longer. Raw costs more.

Is raw hair better than virgin hair?

Raw hair lasts longer and has more consistent texture, so it is better if you reinstall the same hair repeatedly. Virgin hair is unprocessed too and costs less, which makes it better value for most installs. Neither is chemically treated — the difference is sourcing, not quality of processing.

How can I tell if hair is really remy?

Run the hair between your fingers from root to tip and then in reverse. Remy hair is smooth one way and slightly resistant the other, because the cuticles all face the same direction. Non-remy hair feels identical both ways because the cuticle has been stripped off with acid.

What do hair grades like 10A and 12A mean?

Nothing standardised. Letter grades are marketing language invented by sellers, and there is no body that certifies them, so a 12A from one vendor is not comparable to a 12A from another. Judge hair by whether it is remy, virgin or raw, and by the reputation of the seller.

Is Brazilian or Peruvian hair actually from those countries?

Usually not. In the extension trade those names describe a texture style rather than a verified country of origin. Treat them as a description of how the hair looks and behaves, not as a sourcing claim.

Can I dye virgin or raw hair?

Yes. Because neither has been chemically processed, both take colour far more predictably than treated hair, and raw hair generally holds tone best. Lifting to a light blonde is still chemically demanding — have a professional do it, or buy a pre-coloured option.

How long does human hair last?

With proper care, 100% human hair can be reinstalled across many months. Raw hair lasts longest because the cuticle is fully intact and the hair came from a single donor. How you wash, seal the wefts and store it between installs matters more than the label.

Are the prices on your site wholesale?

No. Displayed prices are retail, which is what any customer pays. Wholesale pricing is a separate program that stylists, salons and businesses apply for — see our wholesale hair vendor page.

Where does your hair ship from?

Our own warehouse in Atlanta, Georgia, Monday through Friday. Orders placed before 12pm ET typically ship the same business day, US orders over $99 ship free, and every order carries a 30-day return policy. We also have retail stores in Atlanta and Tucker, Georgia.
