The Complete Guide to HD Lace Closures

The Complete Guide to HD Lace Closures - Private Label

The closure is the piece that makes or breaks any sew-in or wig install.

Get it wrong and no amount of quality bundles can save the look. Get it right and the hairline is undetectable — the kind that makes people stop you and ask if that's your real hair.

HD lace closures have become the professional standard precisely because they get it right.

This guide covers everything you need to know: what HD lace actually is, how it differs from other lace types, what size you need, how to care for it, and what to expect from a quality install.

What Is a Lace Closure?

A lace closure is a hairpiece designed to mimic a natural scalp.

It's placed at the crown of the head and used to close off a sew-in install, creating a realistic parting without exposing the wearer's natural hair or braids underneath.

Unlike a lace frontal — which runs ear to ear and covers the entire hairline — a closure covers a smaller area at the crown.

This makes it lower maintenance, easier to install, and a better fit for everyday wear where you primarily want a clean, natural-looking part rather than full hairline flexibility.

Individual strands of hair are hand-tied into the lace base, which is what creates the appearance of hair growing directly from the scalp. The quality of both the lace and the hair determines how convincing the final result looks.

What Is HD Lace — and Why Does It Matter?

HD stands for High Definition. HD lace is an ultra-thin, ultra-sheer lace material that was originally developed for film and stage productions — environments where a hairline would be examined in extreme close-up and needed to be completely undetectable.

The key measurement is thickness. Standard transparent lace runs at about 0.3mm. HD lace is typically 0.1mm — three times thinner. That difference is significant in practice. Where standard lace sits visibly on the skin and requires foundation, tinting, or heavy blending to disappear, HD lace is so sheer that it adapts to the skin tone beneath it and effectively becomes invisible with minimal effort.

HD lace vs. transparent lace: Transparent lace is a popular and more affordable option that works well across lighter skin tones. HD lace is universally skin-adaptive — it works on every complexion from fair to deep without extra steps. For buyers who want the most natural result with the least manipulation, HD lace is the right choice.

HD lace vs. Swiss lace: Swiss lace is thinner than standard lace but thicker than HD. It's durable and forgiving for beginners but doesn't melt quite as seamlessly as HD. Stylists working at a professional level almost universally prefer HD lace for clients who want the most undetectable finish.

Closure Sizes — Which One Do You Need?

Closures come in several sizes.

The measurement refers to the dimensions of the lace base — the first number is the width, the second is how far back from the hairline the lace extends.

4x4 closure: The most common and most affordable option. Gives you 4 inches of parting space in both directions — enough for a middle part or slight side part. Best for buyers who want a simple, clean install and prefer lower maintenance. Good for beginners.

5x5 closure: One extra inch in both directions makes a noticeable difference. The additional parting depth creates more flexibility for deeper side parts and styles that require more coverage at the crown. Delivers what many buyers describe as a "frontal look without the frontal work." This is the most versatile closure size and the sweet spot for most installs.

6x6 and 7x7 closures: For buyers who want even more parting flexibility or coverage. The larger the closure, the more styling options — but also more lace to maintain and blend. PLE carries a full range of closure sizes for all textures.

Why the Texture of Your Closure Matters as Much as the Size

Size and lace type are only half the equation.

The hair on the closure — its curl pattern, its texture, its luster — needs to match the bundles it's being installed with.

A mismatched closure is visible at the hairline even when the lace melts perfectly. The curl at the crown will look different from the body of the install, and that seam is obvious.

This is why buying your closure and bundles from the same collection matters, and why we steam-set our closures to the exact same curl pattern as our matching bundles.

For Burmese Curly installs, our Raw Burmese Curly 5x5 HD Lace Closure is steam-set to the same 3B–3C corkscrew pattern as the Raw Burmese Curly Bundles. Same raw base, same curl, seamless blend from the part through the full length of the install.

The Raw Burmese Curly 5x5 HD Lace Closure

For buyers specifically looking for a curly closure to complete a Burmese Curly install, here's what our 5x5 HD Lace Closure delivers:

  • Hair type: 100% Raw Human Hair (Steam-Set Curl)
  • Lace: Ultra-thin HD lace, 0.1mm — melts on all skin tones
  • Curl: 3B–3C Burmese Corkscrew — matches the bundle pattern exactly
  • Density: 130%
  • Hairline: Pre-plucked with baby hairs
  • Knots: Single, small knots — minimal and difficult to detect
  • Part: Free part — left, right, or middle
  • Lengths: 14" and 18" (measured stretched)

The 14" pairs well with bundle installs in the 14"–18" range. The 18" is the better call when your bundles are 20"+ so the closure length flows naturally into the rest of the install.

Bleaching the Knots on an HD Lace Closure

Bleaching the knots is a common customization that makes the base of each hair strand disappear into the lace, creating an even more realistic scalp appearance.

On HD lace closures, this step is often optional — the single, small knots and ultra-thin lace are already minimal enough that many experienced stylists skip the bleach entirely.

If your stylist prefers to bleach, the critical rule for HD lace is: never leave bleach on the lace for more than 60 seconds. HD lace is ultra-thin and will be damaged by over-processing. The lace becomes weakened, the knots loosen, and the closure sheds — all of which are preventable with proper timing. This is not the same timing used on standard Swiss lace and should be clearly communicated to your stylist before they begin.

How to Care for Your HD Lace Closure

HD lace is more delicate than standard lace by design — thinner, more skin-adaptive, and more sensitive to harsh handling. The care routine accounts for this.

Washing: Co-wash or use a sulfate-free shampoo. Wash with a gentle downward motion — never scrub the lace or rough it up. The lace base can develop bald spots if handled aggressively during washing.

Drying: Pat the lace dry gently with a microfiber towel. Do not rub. Air dry whenever possible. If you use a hooded dryer, keep it on low heat.

Curl refresh: For curly closures, a light mist of water and scrunch is all that's needed to bring the pattern back between washes.

At night: Tie the hair with a silk or satin scarf before sleeping. Never sleep on HD lace without protection — the friction of cotton against the lace weakens it over time and shortens the closure's life significantly.

Heavy oils on the lace: Avoid them. Heavy oils and silicone-based products cause buildup that is difficult to remove from lace and weakens the base over time. A small amount on the hair itself is fine — keep product off the lace base directly.

Storage: When not installed, lay the closure flat on a wig head or store in a satin bag. Never fold or crumple HD lace — the base can crease and weaken at fold lines.

Closure vs. Frontal — Which Should You Choose?

The most common question before buying a closure: do I actually need a closure, or should I get a frontal?

The short answer is: choose a closure if you want everyday ease and lower maintenance. Choose a frontal if you want full styling freedom — ponytails, slicked back, any parting direction — and you're comfortable with a more involved install and upkeep.

For a full comparison of both options with specific guidance on which fits different install goals, read: Closure vs. Frontal — Which One Is Right for Your Install?

If you've decided a frontal is the better fit, we carry the matching Raw Burmese Curly 13x4 HD Lace Frontal in the same 3B–3C pattern.
