A Quick Introduction to HD Lace Closures for Beginners

An Introduction to HD Lace Closures for Beginners

Mikey Moran

What do I love about HD lace? Let me count the ways!

Our goal at Private Label is to allow our clients to have the most realistic hairstyle possible. The goal of hair extensions and wigs is to not look like you are wearing hair extensions or a wig!

This is where HD lace comes in.

HD closures are known for being able to create a realistic hairline, ease of installation, and to match your quality hair bundles.

Due to their high-quality thin lace material, HD lace closures have become the first choice of most hair styling lovers.

They provide comfort and protect the scalp and natural hair from potential damage (protective styling).

Did you Know? HD Lace has been popular in TV and Film for decades. It only reached the consumer market in 2015 and since the popularity of this lace has skyrocketed.

If you are a beginner in the use of HD closures, this blog will help you select the proper closure and give tips for its installation, styling, and maintenance.

What is an HD Lace Closure?

HD lace closures are the most recent popular innovation in hair extensions for the consumer market. They refer to hair pieces made from high-quality sheer lace material.

Their transparency allows them to blend effortlessly with all skin tones, giving a seamless, natural look.

They are perfect at creating a visual illusion in which the lace closure hair appears to be natural hair growing out of the scalp.

Due to the thin and delicate lace material, HD lace closures provide a smooth, flat base for sew-hairstyles and are popular when making wigs.

Hair technicians tie strands of human hair into the tiny holes of the lace to manufacture the closure piece. This is time consuming and tedious.

HD Lace closures have helped increase the popularity of Glueless Wigs as there is minimal work to make the wig look realistic in the hairline area. They are a pop on and go style wig which are great for beginners!

Why Choose HD Lace Closures?

Before opting for an HD lace closure, one must know why one should choose this closure type.

HD closures are the perfect choice due to their undetectable nature.

Long have the days gone by where you could easily detect the thick lace of the past on your forehead. And why would you want someone to see the lace on your forehead? You don't!

The HD lace makes the installation invisible on your hairline, offering a natural appearance. HD closures provide a seamless transition from the scalp to the human hair extensions, creating an illusion of hair growth from the scalp.

Their lighter lace material aids in their higher breathability than regular closures, making them comfortable. HD lace closures offer great styling versatility, ranging from straight to updos.

Pro Tip: HD Lace closures are more delicate compared to transparent lace. Please take special care when handling.

They also allow natural parting of the hair in various directions. With proper HD lace closures care and maintenance, HD lace closures can last for longer.

How to Select the Right HD Lace Closure

While choosing the HD lace closure, one must consider certain factors.

These are:

Lace Color

Although the lace material of these closures is usually almost clear, it is also available in different shades depending on the hair store you are purchasing from.

We have HD closures on display at our hair superstores and welcome for you to stop by and see the lace in person!

HD lace is going to work with most skin tones to ensure perfect matching. On the other hand, Transparent lace closures may need tinting to match it perfectly with the skin tone.

Hair Texture

To attain a more natural look, match the texture of HD lace closures with your hair bundles.

HD lace closures are available in various textures, such as straight, wavy, curly, etc. Private Label Extensions offers the most incredible texture variety in HD lace closures.

Lace Size

Select the closure size according to the scalp area you want to cover. They are available in sizes like 2x6 lace closures, 4x4 lace closures, 5x5, 6x6, and the largest closure size is 7x7.

Closure Installation Preparation

Let's get your hair ready for the perfect closure install. Shall we?

Your natural hair must be prepared to achieve a successful HD lace closure installation and be prepared before installing your HD lace closure.

Please don't skep these steps!

The stepwise procedure is as follows:

Clean Your Scalp

Start by washing and conditioning your scalp.

Washing will remove dirt and oil residues, while conditioning helps nourish and moisturize the hair. Let your hair dry completely.

Braid Your Hair

Prepare a smooth and flat base for the HD lace closure by braiding and securing it over the scalp with hair pins.

Cover your short hair with a wig cap, and your base will be ready.

Customize the Closure

The customization process includes bleaching the knots and maybe some plucking to match your natural hairline.

Plucking the closure's hairline to match its density with natural hair density should only take a few minutes. This will help the natural transition from the scalp to the HD lace closure.

Back in the day hair companies would have way too much hair in the front of the closure and you would have to pluck it for days. We have come a long way and now the "pre-plucked" closure hairlines are the standard.

Closure Installation Tips

Now that your hair is clean, scalp is feeling good, it't time to prepare the HD lace closure for installation. Follow the steps below to ensure its secure installation.

Secure the Closure:

  • Place the closure on your head.
  • Adjust its position to cover the required scalp area.
  • Secure the closure with hair pins to keep it in its place.

Apply Adhesive

To hold the closure in place longer, secure it using a lace adhesive or lace frontal glue designed for HD lace closures.

This involves applying glue around the closure's hairline. Allow it to dry slightly before attaching.  High-quality adhesive can be accessed from Private Label Extensions.

Attach the Closure

Using a curved needle and thread, sew the closure around the perimeter, starting from the back, and work your way around to ensure it lays flat and seamlessly blends with your sew-in.

Pro Tip: For the best results when sewing down a closure, always ensure the client's natural hair is braided flat and the closure is properly aligned before sewing. This will prevent bumps and ensure a smooth, natural-looking finish.

Blend the Closure

To achieve a seamless, natural look, blend the lace material of HD lace closures along the edges of your forehead.

This can be done by applying foundation or concealer that matches your skin tone.

Styling Your HD Lace Closure

When installed securely, HD lace closures allow a wide range of hairstyles.

However, one should take care while styling them to make them long-lasting.

Heat Styling

HD lace closures allow for heat styling as human hair has been used in the construction of making the closure. However, it should be limited to maintain hair integrity.

Excessive heat styling causes frizziness and hair shedding. While using heat tools, always use heat protectant spray.

Pro Tip: Never let your heat styling tool touch the lace!

Trimming the Hair

First, start off with the proper length closure. With an HD lace closure, you can quickly achieve your desired length and hair shape by trimming the hair.

Proceed with care and cut the hair only a little at a time, as this will affect the overall look.

If you plan on trimming your closure we recommend getting an additional 2" length when purchasing to allow for more styling options.

Closure Maintenance

Styling may damage the hair's texture and reduce its longevity despite it being a necessity.

Proper hair care involves washing and conditioning it with sulfate-free products.

If you are using a lace glue we recommend using a glue remover and cleaner so you can reinstall the closure again. These items are available at a Private Label hair store and with us online.

Moisturizing it regularly will maintain its natural shine and luster. Human hair products do require maintenance!

Removing the HD Lace Closure

Follow the steps while removing your HD lace closures to avoid tearing.

Loosen the Adhesive

First, loosen the adhesive using a lace glue remover, available at Private Label Extensions. Apply the remover along the edges and leave for a few minutes. This helps break down the adhesives.

Removing the Closure

Grab a pair of sheers to remove the sewn down portion of the lace. Now lift the closure gently from one side and work your way across. Please don't pull the closure to avoid its damage.

Clean Up

After removing the closure, clean the scalp and the closure to remove the leftover adhesive residues. Wash and condition them to nourish them.
