pros and cons of using dry shampoo versus shampoo

Pros and Cons of Using Dry Shampoo vs Regular Shampoo

The Dry Shampoo Movement

Dry shampoo has recently shifted the hair community. As many of us know, it’s not always best to shampoo the hair often. The regular shampoo has ingredients in it that can harm the hair. Typically, you should not shampoo your hair often because it can strip your hair of moisture and cause your curls to be brittle. For a long time, we were told to condition more as a replacement for not shampooing often and only shampoo once to twice a week to remove product buildup. I grew up in up era where dry shampoo was not a standard tool used to curb the process of regular washing. In the more recent years, dry shampoo has become increasingly popular, and it’s made the difference for people’s everyday hair routines. I tried dry shampoo for the first time when I didn’t feel like doing a wash routine but was in dire need of a touch-up. I loved it because of how easy and straightforward it was. My hair smelled terrific after, and it was relatively clean. After using it for the first time, I thought to myself, “Why not use it all the time?” With everything, there are pros and cons. I’m going to give you the guideline of shampoo vs. dry shampoo, and all the pros and cons of each one.

Pros of Dry Shampoo

Let’s talk about all the pros of dry shampoo. After my experience, I realized that dry shampoo had many advantages that are beneficial to my everyday life like affordability. Some of the pros I’m going to discuss are quick hair enhancement, great scents, better time management, and longevity. I also saw how much less I used heat on my hair. All of these pros are essential to hair health and styling, and dry shampoo provides a quick and easy way to achieve all of these things.

Quick Hair Enhancement

Dry shampoo is an excellent tool for those that need a quick hair fix. I know some people that have busier morning schedules than me, and they say that dry shampoo works great. Even if you don’t have a working schedule, using a product like dry shampoo makes it easier to make hair look and feel shiny, and clean. You typically spray dry shampoo onto your hair. You should do a quick rinse of your hair then apply the dry shampoo to your roots.

It Smells Great

Another great benefit, if not one of my favorites, of dry shampoo, is that it smells great! Of course, this only applies if you get a product that has those sweet smelling scents. However, be careful of these scents as some ingredients can be harmful. Look for products that have natural scents in them, not perfumes or fragrance. There are many different scents of dry shampoo such as grapefruit, lemon, berries and so on. My favorite is grapefruit! All you need to do is find a product with grapefruit listed on the ingredient label. Usually, any scent will smell great.

Better Time Management

The best quality of dry shampoo is that it gives people better time management. Time management is essential for people that have lifestyles they can’t afford to adjust. As mentioned before, dry shampoo is a quick and easy way to keep your hair clean, especially while on the move. I’ve personally used dry shampoo while traveling. There was this one time that I was at the airport needed a quick retouch. I went to the restroom, rinsed quickly, and applied the shampoo. It is simple and straightforward.

Another fantastic quality of dry shampoo is that it provides longevity. When you use dry shampoo, you don’t have to do a regular wash day. A regular wash day requires time and effort. Dry shampoo, as mentioned before, is quick and easy. Dry shampoo will help you get through the week without having to wash your hair thoroughly. You can keep those styles that you don’t feel like cleaning for a while longer by using dry shampoo. Also, if you’re someone that doesn’t like to wash your hair often then dry shampoo is the product for you.

Cons of Dry Shampoo

Although dry shampoo has many positives, it also has some cons. No product is perfect. Some of the disadvantages of dry shampoo are potential dandruff, questionable ingredients, dusty hair, and odd looking texture. Of these cons, I believe that possible dandruff is the worst. I’m someone that has suffered from dandruff before, so I know how difficult it can be to handle. The cons of dry shampoo shouldn’t steer you away altogether, but you should consider them when choosing your options.

Dandruff can be caused by dry skin, not cleaning enough, or using too much shampoo. Dry shampoo is essentially already dry and depending on the kind of brand you get; it can dry out your hair even more. Dry shampoo can cause flakes in the hair. I’ve dealt with dandruff before, and dry shampoo did make it worse. If you’re someone that deals with dandruff, then you need to take care of the issue before using dry shampoo. Dry shampoo can worsen the problem of dandruff if used too often, or while already dealing with dandruff.

Questionable Ingredients

As with any product you may use, there is always the risk of getting a product that has questionable ingredients. Questionable ingredients would include components that are harmful or processed to be damaging to hair. Ethanol is broadly toxic. Talc is also poisonous and acts as an absorbent in dry shampoo. It’s powdered, which can also cause issues. Parabens are a fragrance ingredient that can also be harmful. Avoid these toxic products and look for dry shampoo products that have all natural ingredients. When you buy organic products, you will prevent dangerous parts and still be able to achieve a fantastic look.

Dusty Hair

Dusty hair is also a consequence of dry shampoo. Since most dry shampoo has talc in it, it can create a powdered look. A powder can be challenging to remove from hair. If you use dry shampoo more than once a week, expect to see some dust in your hair from the residue. If you want to avoid getting dust in your hair, try using a product that doesn’t have talc in it. If you avoid talc as much as possible, you should be fine. Finding natural products can be difficult, but it is worth the search, especially when it comes to the health of your hair.

Odd Looking Texture

Dry shampoo can give you an odd looking texture. Dry shampoo is like gel; when you leave it in too long, it can look flakey and dry. Dry shampoo is meant to absorb dirt and oils that make hair look dull and flat, but if left in too long, it can absorb the natural oils as well. This isn’t good because you want to ensure that your hair can make the necessary oils to keep your hair healthy. Since dry shampoo can absorb the oils, it can leave you with an odd looking texture. Your air can look dusty, dry, and fluffy if not correctly styled.

Avoid The Cons

It’s straightforward to avoid the cons of dry shampoo by choosing dry shampoo products that have natural ingredients. Don’t use dry shampoo too often, and make sure to wash your hair at least once a week. Dry shampoo is meant to be a quick fix, not a permanent one. Dry shampoo can be great when you use it correctly and in moderation. With a combination of shampoo and dry shampoo, you should have clean, and shining hair.

What About Regular Shampoo?

In comparison to dry shampoo, regular shampoo also has its’ pros and cons. We’re pretty much aware of the pros of shampooing, but what we should discuss is the cons of shampoo. I’ll go into detail about the cons of shampoo so that you’re aware of what you’re getting into when you wash your hair. By understanding the pros and cons of regular shampoo, you can compare it to the dry shampoo and see how both of these options suit you best.

Pros of Regular Shampoo

Although it’s known that shampoo can dry out hair, there are still may benefit to using shampoo. A shampoo has many benefits including fighting with dryness, calming itching, relieving irritations, reducing redness, controlling oiliness, and removing flakes. Shampoo can help fight dryness if you choose the right product. The shampoo gives your hair the proper moisture that it needs to be healthy. Regular shampoo is excellent for calming itchiness and relieving redness. I’m someone that has an abnormally itchy scalp, so I use a shampoo that has ingredients to ease that. I don’t deal with redness, but when I am itching, the shampoo I use has a cooling agent that can reduce the itchiness and what would be the redness if I could see it. It also relieves any irritation that I may be facing as well. I have a friend that has an abnormally oily scalp, and she has to shampoo at least twice a week to subdue it. The shampoo is excellent for controlling excessive oiliness. Shampoo also controls flakes in the hair such as dandruff and so on. Shampoo will be able to wash away that access residue that has dried up and become flaky. All in all, shampoo is excellent for many things when it comes to hair health, and in comparison to dry shampoo, it may be the better option to consider when you need to complete a sturdy wash routine.

Cons of Regular Shampoo

Shampooing too much is known for stripping away the natural oils that your hair produces. However, that’s not the only con that there is when it comes to shampoo. Most shampoos have ingredients that are incredibly harmful. There are harmful ingredients such as parabens, synthetic coloring, fragrances, SLS, SLED, formaldehyde and more. In more recent times, companies have been making products that don’t contain those harmful ingredients. When looking for shampoo, try using a product that has natural ingredients. Also, when you don’t feel like shampooing, be aware that conditioners can also be helpful in maintaining your hairstyles.

The Bottom Line

In my opinion, I don’t think that one product is better than the other. I believe that both dry shampoo and shampoo can be beneficial, primarily if used together. Dry shampoo is great for people that have busy lifestyles. It is excellent for achieving a quick fix for mildly dirty hair. It works wonders for providing cleanliness in a fast manner. Just be aware that dry shampoo has its’ pros and cons, and it’s the perfect product. Shampoo should replace dry shampoo when it comes to a massive cleaning job. If you have a lot of gunk in your hair that you need to get out of your hair, dry shampoo won’t do the trick. Shampoo also is great for cleaning extremely oily hair. Oily hair can cause your strands to look heavy. A shampoo is great when it has natural ingredients that aren’t harmful. If you use it too much, it can strip your hair of its’ natural shine. Try to interchange between shampoo and dry shampoo and you should be fine. Get natural ingredients or products with the least amount of damaging ingredients. Keep this list of pros and cons in mind when you’re trying to figure out what to do with your hair.
