How to Install and Care for Your Human Hair Ponytail
What are the next steps now that you have your ponytail extension from Private Label?
Need a quick updo to keep the hair out of your face while you’re running errands? Want a simple yet stunning updo to wear to a formal event? The typical go-to for occasions big and small is almost always a ponytail.
Simply put, a ponytail is one of the most convenient and versatile hairstyles. However, not everyone “loves” the way they look in a pony.
Some may not have the length they crave, while others are left with thin, lifeless ponytail extensions that fall short every time. If you want to upgrade your ponytail, Private Label has you covered.
We offer a wide selection of top-tier ponytails in various shades and textures to suit your needs - all crafted using only the finest selection of human hair.
This guide will share all the must-know info about our fantastic ponytails, including how to install and care for them and some of our favorite styling tips to help you look and feel your best.
Benefits of Human Hair Ponytails
If you found this article before purchasing your new ponytail from Private Label, it would be a good idea to explain the benefits before discussing how to care for and wear them.
OK, but why would you spend your hard-earned money on a ponytail extension? Girl, let me tell you - there are so many benefits to wearing one of these babies, including:
Natural Look and Feel
For starters, Private Label extensions are designed using 100% human hair, guaranteeing a natural appearance and feel.
So, when a certain someone decides they want to run their fingertips through your ponytail, you won’t have to worry about it feeling like a piece of shag carpet rather than beautiful, sultry smooth tresses.
Longevity and Durability
Besides looking like a million bucks, Private Label ponytail extensions are built to last, too. We pride ourselves on crafting ponytails that last a long time (up to a year or longer with proper maintenance), knowing that you’ll want to wear them repeatedly.
You’ll also love how durable they are. While we always recommend handling things carefully, our ponytails are built with toughness and can handle almost anything.
Styling Versatility
Remember how I said Private Label ponytails are made with human hair? It’s not just for looks, babe. With this type of hair, the styling possibilities are endless—you can curl, straighten, and dye it without thinking twice. These ponytails look and act like natural tresses that can be customized however you please. Just start with a Raw Straight Ponytail and work from there.
Easy to Maintain
Some women fall into the “absolutely not” category when it comes to extensions, worrying they’ll be challenging to maintain and not worth the hassle.
I will be honest - synthetic ponytail extensions are a nuisance and should be avoided like the plague. But our human hair ponytails? It's a breeze to maintain—I promise! (I’m sharing care tips below—check it out!)
How to Install Your Human Hair Ponytail
When installing your human hair ponytail, it all comes down to precision. It’s not difficult, though; the more you do it, the easier it gets. Here’s a basic step-by-step breakdown: You will need a comb, clips, small rubber bands, edge control brushes/soft bristle brushes, blow dryer, and holding spray.
Part Hair Into Three Sections
The first step is to part your hair into three sections. Begin by parting down the middle. Then, divide from ear to ear. Finally, separate the front portion from the back portion. Keep the parting as aligned as possible.
Choose Your Ponytail Location
From there, you will separate the back portion depending on where you want your ponytail to sit. For example, to create a mid-ponytail, you’ll want to separate the back portion right down the middle below your crown. Pull the bottom, free hairs into a clip.
Use a rubber band to tie the upper portion. Spray the ponytail with holding spray.
Spray as closely as possible, as you want the ponytail to be molded.
Combine the Back Hair
Now, brush or comb the dangling hair upward towards your miniature ponytail. Use holding spray to hold the hair up. Then, use your preferred product (beeswax, gel, holding product) to tame your flyaways and create a neat and clean appearance.
Use your edge control brush for added precision. Once satisfied with the appearance, tie the bottom half with the miniature ponytail using a rubber band. The ponytail should be nice and tight.
Sleek the Front Hairs
Release one side of your clipped front hair. Decide whether or not you would like to leave baby hairs or not. From there, comb your front hair back towards the ponytail.
Use the same preferred holding products to create a sleek and smooth aesthetic.
Once you like the look, tie the hair into the ponytail. Continue on the other side, paying close attention to match both sides.
Braid Your Natural Hair
This part is simple. Now that all your hair is tied back into a “natural” ponytail, braid from top to bottom and secure the end with a rubber band. Ensure the rubber band is tight so your hair doesn’t come loose.
Apply the Ponytail Extension
Now for the fun part - adding the human hair extension! Place your braid inside of the ponytail pocket. Ensure that the comb is positioned to connect to the base of your hair.
Firmly attach the comb to the base. From there, you can use the included drawstring to pull it tight enough until you feel safe and secure wearing your extension.
Spray the loose piece with holding spray and wrap it around your base. Continue spraying and wrapping until there is no hair left. Keep a firm grip as you wrap so the ponytail does not get loose. Give the ponytail base another spray and blow dry to lock it in.
Styling Tips for Your Human Hair Ponytail
See? Adding a ponytail extension is so easy! You should be able to get it installed in under ten minutes.
Want to shake up your look for an upcoming event? Whether it’s a charity, a date, or a wedding, here are some of my top styling tips to elevate your ponytails:
Create Different Styles
Ladies, there are so many incredible ways to style your pony. My fave is going with a sleek, sky-high ponytail that looks like it should be on the cover of Vogue. Another great option?
A super voluminous pony that’s ready for a Victoria’s Secret photoshoot. You can also toss a cutesy braid to your look for a more casual vibe. Go with the three-strand classic or try something new, like a fishtail or rope.
Add Accessories
An easy way to take your ponytail to new heights is to throw in your favorite accessories! Again, the options are endless.
If you’re a scarf girlie, wear it—especially on hot days. If you can’t get enough glitz and glam, hairpins and beads will be your pony’s BFF.
Heat Style!
Want some gorgeous texture? Reach for that hot tool, girlfriend! Hot tools are an easy way to add interest to your ponytail.
Use your straightener for a sleek and polished aesthetic, or go with a curly masterpiece that’ll make heads turn. Ensure you use a top-notch heat protectant with the lowest heat setting!
Caring for Your Human Hair Ponytail
Proper care and maintenance are key to unlocking longevity. They will also ensure that your ponytail extension looks incredible, even a few months later. Here are my top five tips for caring for Private Label ponytails:
Brush, Brush, Brush!
I can’t explain to you just how important brushing your ponytail is. Grab your comb or brush and take care of those tresses to avoid tangles, mats, and other nightmares!
Shampoo and Condition
Yes, your ponytail must be shampooed and conditioned. How often depends mainly on how much you wear the ponytail, where you wear it, etc. Those who use their ponytail regularly should wash about once a week.
Ensure you’re using a shampoo and conditioner designed for hair extensions. I always recommend leave-in conditioners to enhance overall moisture and shine.
Dry Correctly
When it comes time to dry your ponytail, please don’t be rough - your ponytail will thank you. Gently blot the ponytail with a towel and hang it to dry!
Store Correctly, Too
Ladies, don’t chuck your ponytail to the back of your bathroom cabinet, and expect it to look great the next time you want to wear it. Instead, store it gently and in a safe and secure spot.
You can hang it on a hanger or buy a specialty extension holder. You can also use the handy Silky Hair Extensions Bag for storage. It comes with your ponytail purchase, making it a convenient (and free) choice!
Troubleshooting Common Issues
Before you head out to rock your new pony, let’s take a look at three common problems and what to do about them:
Tangling and Shedding
Ah, an extension wearer's worst nightmare! If you’re dealing with tangling and shedding, you’re likely not caring for your extension correctly. Ensure it’s brushed, conditioned, and stored correctly!
Lost Luster
Are your ponytails looking a little “meh?” Lost luster can quickly be resolved with a deep conditioning treatment!
Installation Issues
If your ponytail’s caught slippin’, you’re not securing it correctly. Always ensure you’re using holding spray and pulling tightly - but not so tight that you’re causing discomfort.
