With the spring season quickly approaching, it is not too early to consider our hair health and style. Along with blooming flowers and flowy maxi dresses comes heat and humidity. For me, when the weather is warming up, I love to show off my hair that’s been hibernating all winter long under hats, turbans and my bed comforter. But almost nothing is more tragic than spending all morning on a hairstyle that is smooth and sleek to end up looking like a giant puffball by the end of the day. Am I the only one? Humidity can add to the stress of maintaining frizz-free hairstyles and keep us limited to only a few looks. Limited style choices are never fun. Especially when you are showing off your warm-weather style, it is always best to have options! Why Does My Hair Frizz Up?

Before we tackle the ways you can fight frizz during humid months, we have to spill the tea on why your hair will frizz in the first place. Humid air refers to a large amount of water vapor present in the atmosphere. Water vapor is essentially the gaseous state of water and occurs when water from the ground evaporates into the air. Depending on the time of year and the area that you live in will determine the amount of humidity present which can cause frizz. What does this have to do with your hair? Well our hair, much like the rest of our body, needs water. We could almost say that our hair craves moisture especially when there is a lack of moisture in our routines. Whenever there is water nearby, our hair reacts by opening the cuticle layer to receive the water. This opening of your cuticle layer is why your hair appears larger once you walk outside. You can think of the cuticle layer structured like the shingles on a rooftop. When the layers are open wide, then the moisture can easily escape into the atmosphere. When the layers are close together, then the water stays inside providing you with moisture and shiny hair. Your hair is attempting to collect the water in the atmosphere. Hence why your gorgeous sleek styles may not stand a chance during the spring and summer. When your hair reacts this way, it is a good indicator that your hair does not have enough moisture. Follow these simple ways to add and retain more moisture in your hair care routine to ensure humidity does not ruin your fabulous hairstyle.

Healthy Hair From The Inside Out

First thing's first that healthy hair begins with what we put on the inside of us. Unfortunately, that second helping of chocolate cake will not be adding nutrients to our hair. Sad face. I’m not saying to turn into an aggressive health-food nut (no one likes those people), but I am encouraging you to consider your hair when it comes to your food intake. Adding foods higher in protein and rich in vitamins can make a huge difference in the health of your hair. When your hair health is optimal, then it is better equipped to retain the moisture you put in during your daily hair care routine. Taking your daily vitamins can help cater to your hair’s health needs. In addition to the foods you eat, also consider the type of water and the amount of water you take in daily. Adding more moisture-rich products and oils to our hair is only contributing to the surface of our hair. When we drink in the recommended amount of water daily, we can ensure that our hair will be moisturized from the inside out. Eating water-dense foods such as cucumbers and watermelons can help you add both nutrients and water to your diet. Look for water with a pH of 8 or higher. Alkaline waters are typically more nutrient-dense than regular or tap water and do not have all those sneaky metals. Healthier food options can lead to us having beautiful frizz-free hair, and a banging summer body wouldn’t be bad either.

Protective Styling As Your Go-To

Frizzy hair can occur from an excess amount of manipulation to your hair. When we play in our hair or fidget with our strands, we add stress to our hair and release moisture from our hair onto our fingertips. To resist the urge to touch your hair, consider a protective style. Extensions are a great way to protect your natural hair while still having numerous options for changing up your look. The possibilities for installing extensions are endless with sew-ins, clip-ins and tape-ins to name a few. If you want to switch up your hairstyle daily, experiment with different types of wigs. Hairstyling is all about self-expression! For quicker styling, opt for extensions with curls and waves rather than straight styles. Braids and buns are also an option as a versatile protective style. Remember we want to keep our cuticle layer as close as possible to keep the water inside our hair and working its moisture magic.

Moisture-Rich Products Are Your Friend

When it comes to the types of products to use on your hair, consider using hair care products that are moisture-rich. Shop for products that use the words “moisture” and “replenishing.” Typically, these products will have water as the first ingredient and use the word “aqueous,” which simply means “in water.” These products will add moisture to your hair instead of strip your hair of its natural oils. Adding a leave-in conditioner to your hair routine can help to lock in the moisture from your wash day. Depending on the hair texture you have will determine the type of products you use. People with fine hair would benefit from lightweight products that do not add too much weight and product to the hair. Medium to coarse hair textures can go for products such as thick butter and creams. Naturally, fine hair textures have more moisture content since this hair texture does not have a lot of cuticle layers. The more cuticle layers equal, the more difficult it is for moisture-rich products to penetrate the hair follicle. Dense cuticle layers can result in drier and frizzier hair for medium to coarse hair.

It’s All About The Cleaning Technique

Now all the products in the hair care aisle will not be able to help your frizzy hair if you do not start with clean hair. Clean hair is like beginning with a blank canvas. Wash your hair at least once per week to rid your hair of product buildup and environmental debris. Use a clarifying shampoo (they are typically clear in color) to ensure that your shampoo can break up the dirt and oil on your hair. The technique you use to clean your hair is essential. To retain the most water inside your hair cuticle, wash your hair in a downward motion. By rubbing your hair downtown, the cuticles are more likely to lay flat against one another rather than raise up and let go of all that excellent water. The temperature of the water as you shampoo can also contribute to how your cuticle layers will react. Don’t worry I am not going to recommend cold showers from here on out. I love a long, searing shower. Instead, opt to rinse your hair with cold water right before you jump out. The cold water will close the cuticle layer and help to seal in the moisture you’ve added. Right before coming out of the shower, I stick my head under cold water for a few seconds and then finish off with a leave-in conditioner. This tip is helpful for color-treated hair as well.

Towels Are So Overrated

We have all heard that T-shirts are the new towels, but it is true! The fibers of your typical bathroom towel can snag at your hair and roughen up your cuticle layer. Microfiber towels are a better option and are more absorbent as well. You no longer have to walk around with a towel on your head trying to soak up your sopping wet hair as you try to put on your makeup. If you are not able to get a microfiber towel, then it is perfectly okay to use an old T-shirt. Although not as absorbent, T-shirts will not snag at your hair and disrupt your cuticle layer and moisture content.

Sometimes Steam Is Appropriate

I know we have spent the majority of the time talking about how to avoid humidity, but I promise this tips will empower you to even try straight styles in these warmer times. Steam treatments are an amazing tool to use to give your hair an extra boost of moisture and help reduce potential frizz. Remember how I mentioned that your hair is reacting to the moisture in the hair? Well, the idea with steam treatments is that your hair will not need to crave for water because it will already have plenty of water contained inside. I like to take my favorite deep conditioner, apply it all over my hair, and sit under the steamer with a plastic cap for thirty minutes. I can ensure that not only is water penetrating into my hair but also I am providing my hair with vitamins and nutrients to thrive and be my shining crown. The heat from the steamers opens up your hair cuticle and deposits water on the inside. Many salons carry steamers (some instead of hair dryers!), and they are available for you to purchase your own at home. A cold rinse after the deep steamer treatment will seal in the moisture and cause your hair cuticles to lay flat against one another. A steamer is a perfect investment for your hair especially if you can’t break up with your hair straightener.

A Good Satin Night’s Sleep

You already know what I am going to say. It is time to make the switch from cotton pillowcases to satin pillowcases. You can opt for silk pillowcases if you are feeling fancy. The cotton material soaks up and takes away all the moisture in your hair by rubbing against your hair and lifting up your cuticle layer. Satin pillowcases, on the other hand, are smooth and glide over your hair without much disturbance. Satin pillowcases come in a variety of colors and prices that range from anyone-can-purchase-this to only-Oprah-can-purchase-this. You gain bonus points by also wearing a satin cap or scarf. You can think of the satin pillowcases as reinforcement in case your scarf comes off at night. A satin pillowcase can also help retain the moisture in your skin during your sleep. Who doesn’t want to wake up with hair free of frizz and glowing skin? Maybe finally we all can sing that we woke up like this!

Sealing Is Believing

My last tip for overcoming humidity and frizz is all about sealing in the hard work you’ve done. Adding oils, such as coconut oil, and serums to the end of your hair routine will seal in the moisture in your hair follicle and give you stunning shine. It is important to note that oils and serums do not supply your hair with any moisture. Dry hair with oil on top is still dry hair. The previous tips add moisture to the inside and outside of your hair. You can think of oils and serums as the icing on the cake. A small amount goes a long way and will not weigh down your fabulous style. Now you are ready to take on the warmer months with limitless possibilities.
